Safes
OK,
I'm in the market for a small but good and relativly inexpensive gun safe. What brands and specs should I look for?

Mike, this would be my choice for an all around inexpensive safe: Costco - Cannon Safe Security Products Safari Executive Safe Good price, delivered.
I have small safe for handguns, jewelry, papers, etc but would love one like this myself. Maybe Santa Claus will bring one.

I think I would try Cabelas, that way you can compare sizes and price to suit your unique requirements. Fire ratings vary from nothing to a couple hours, any safe can be broken into or stolen, so you are just making it hard for a thief. In my view, heavy and having bolt down positions for the floor and wall are important.
After that, it boils down to how much you wanna spend.

I bought one of the Cannon safes from Costco (not that one, bigger) There price is delivered. Which ever you choose get a dehumidifier, had a couple of rust spots on a few guns. Hodda thunk in this dry area.

Dave, did the rust spots resemble finger prints? Ha Ha ha.. I found a place on line that sells Cannon safes cheap, including delivery. I believe they are in Simi Valley. I'll see if I can find it.

The question is how big and how expensive, I have this one, got it from Dicks sporting goods, I only paid 550, I bet if you can wait till around christmas you will save a lot. The thing that attracted me to it is that its waterproof. Im more worried about water damage than fire but it protects from both.

Go to your local locksmith store or lock and key service. They usually carry safes and will also get "scratch and dent" ones. I bought as fat boy for less than $700.00 with some scratches on it. Looks great in my safe room.

I used to sell fire "proof" safes. Make sure you get at very absolute least a 1/2 hour fire rating at 1200 degrees or higher. (Most important is for the internal temp to not exceed around 350 degrees for the burn period). One hour is much better, but usually quite a bit more expensive. I've seen house fires burn for hours and reduce documents/coins, etc. to ash in one hour rated safes! Also, how much space for long guns vs. shelf space is important as well. If it is not on the ground floor get a "drop rating" as well. It all adds up to money!
If it is primarily for theft protection, make it heavy and bolt it down.

You might want to do a You Tube search on how easy it is to get into the safes you find at Sam's and Costco type stores:

I found a +- 40 yr old Sin Sung Korean safe on craigslist for 75.00. approx 5' x 4' x 3' weight around 2000lbs. Could not find info on it for fire rating, but expect it to be over 2 hours by the construction. Locksmith changed the lock for 200.00. Can't get it into the house, so it's in the garage, with a dehumidifier. built out the interior to hold long guns, pistols, ammo, and my bow. Craigslist is a gold mine if you know what you are looking for....

Mikie, here is the one I bought both of my boys at Costco for about $150 each:
| Sentry® Safe | DSW5781 Electronic FIRE-SAFE®
sold out in no time. Small, inexpensive. I drilled base, 2 holes and bolted to floor about 5 inches down in concrete. Safe didn't weigh a lot, maybe 150 lbs, but secure for water and fire for short periods. Should be enough to delay or discourage entry.

Sturdy Safe
I shopped all over, then bought a Sturdy Safe Gun Safes : Fire Safe Manufacturer : Sturdy Gun Safe
They make a heavy duty safe that's not "frilly". Before I bought, I called to ask some questions and ended up talking to the owner. Their business takes up a city block and the owner buys their steel. He's a straight up guy who actually talked me out of several options saying they really weren't necessary for most customers. I'm happy with the purchase and if I run out of room and need a second, I'll buy from them again.
If you want something less expensive, you might consider this: Eagle gun safe There's no fire insulation...
