When to change the oil
One more opinion question since I'm getting the Cobra ready for the driving season.
I changed my oil just before the Route 66 run which I believe was back in April so I'm coming up on six months since an oil change. I've only put about 2000 miles on it (which isn't much as far as oil goes) since the Route 66 run because of the hot weather here in the summer. Do I go by miles, time or both when determining when to change the oil? Changing the oil ain't cheap so I don't want to do it more than I need to. The oil looks clean on the dip stick and I'm using conventional Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil. The owner's manual I got with the engine is silent on how often to change the oil.
Not that I'm sensitive to oil issues or anything.

One Man's Opinion...
If you're not racing it, and you put about 1,000 to 1,500 miles or less a year on it, and the car spends 99% of the time snugged away in a garage... I think an oil change every other year is fine. Yep, that's right, every other year.

How much oil does your motor hold? I change my oil every 3,000 miles max. If your engine holds 8 qts or so, I would go 3,500 max. I'm conservative on the oil change intervals, but I'd rather spend $50 now then $3000 minum later.

Sandy, seems to me that I heard that racing oil does not have nearly the additives that regular road oil has. Considering that, I'd be more inclined to change it every 2000-3000 miles max, with normal highway miles. More ofter if you were to thrash the car on the track or strip. Some of the other recommendations are probably just as valid but seems like most of them live in climates with much more humidity and cold temperatures than what we have here in the beautiful AZ Desert.

To maintain their warranty, Roush requires that the oil and filter be changed every three months or 3000 miles. They say that even in the winter, when little driving is done in most states, the oil oxidizes while it sits.
I think it should be changed at least as often as every six months or 3000 miles.

Sandy, I have 53,000 miles on my 460. I have changed the oil about every 3000 miles regardless of the time. I also use just regular 5w30 or 10w30 whatever is on sale. Nothing special.

Suggest you change it just before it will be sitting the longest. For me in Washington State, I won't drive much in Nov-Feb so I will change it out in November. Oil will become corrosive over time and this is one of the reasons to change out your oil. If you change it out in the spring of driving season, it sat all winter long with corrosive oil. Better to keep it fresh while it is sitting in the garage.

Since I drive the car all year long (it is southern california after all) I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. Averages out to every 10 months.

Since I do 5-7K a season I change oil once at mid season (Jul - Sep) and when I put the car up for it's "winter" maintenance and it's going to be sitting for long periods. 8 qt system plus filter costs about $50. Very inexpensive insurance.

Oil change ? My wife doesn't believe in them, she's always been perfectly happy with the oil she has.

I have 5 cars that I drive all year but not alot of miles, Average 500 to 1000 yearly. I change oil once a year and all of them get about 6oz's of "Lucas Engine Break-in" additive, except Cobra. It gets 16oz's due to 14 qts of oil and 2 oil filters. OUCH!
There was a few nice Cobra's at "Run to the Pines" last weekend!
Have a good weekend! Jay
