GM makes 70% of their cars in China
Just heard on TV (tv never lies) that 70% of their cars are now made in "ah" China! Say it an't so? How about Ford? We know about Chrysler....TV doesn't lie (everything made in Detroit). Does this mean our fake cobras are made with China imported parts?
Was down at a building the other day watch some steel guys put steel up? Said it was Poland steel? Wander if that meant it was from Poland ...................(Ohio)

Fitz, That's what GM did with the billions that Obama gave them to bail them out. They moved a bunch of manufacturing and all of the R&D and design work to China. So if you buy a GM vehicle or GM made spare parts, there is a better than average chance you will be putting money in the pockets of our Commie friends to the west.

I think those numbers are WAY off.
According to IHS Automotive ( a respected industry data source) General Motors produced less than 16% of its vehicles in China in 2011 ( 2012 global data not yet available). By contrast GM produced more than 38% of its vehicles in North America that same year.

Lads, the reason they are moving their plants overseas is the same reason Phil Michelson wants to leave California. And also as far as the Auto manufacturers, unions.

My guess is that 70% of their cars have parts made in China.

Well you can´t turn the wheels back, China is the biggest market at the moment, VW, Audi have production lines in China, so do others.
We have an electronic superstore chain " Saturn " in Germany, their slogan was for some while: stinginess is cool.
Guess what kills economie.

If you go to China, you see Buicks everywhere. I would guess where I go, 6 out of 10 cars are some type of Buick.
That being said, GM has brought much of their differentials back from China and their new Gen 5 are being made here. I have been in a few of their manufacturing facilities along with Ford and Chrysler. Unions are not a huge issue at these plants anymore simply because everything is automated. Unfortunately, what you do run into is material prices. It is probably 1/3 the cost for a pound of steel in China as it is in the USA.

Just look at who was at SEMA
Hi,
I was floored at the SEMA show, just tons of Chinese booths complete with translators. It was an eye opener.

I was looking online yesterday at car sale reports and came across a page that said 70% of the GM cars that are sold in China are made in house in China.

I read last week that Apple pays their Chinese workers 58 cent per hour.
Last year I read that Ford had the highest cost per unit in the U.S. at 34 hours per unit. Toyota was the best at 28 hours per unit. If Ford's union labor cost is $50 per hour x 34 hours = $1700 per unit. If the union took a 50% cut then Ford could sell their cars / trucks for $850 each less than sticker price. ?????
I wonder how many hours it take to make a cell phone, ccomputer, I Pad etc.?

Chinese vehicle import duties are around 25% so it makes good sense to produce them locally.

I was looking at 2013 5.0 Mustangs and every one I looked at had the transmission assembled in China. I think the transmissions for the 6-cyl Mustangs were made in Canada.

Right now, the federal government owns 500,000,000 shares of GM, or about 26% of the company. It would need to get about $53.00/share for these to break even on the bailout, but the stock closed at only $20.21/share on Tuesday. This left the government holding $10.1 billion worth of stock, and sitting on an unrealized loss of $16.4 billion.

Right now, the government’s GM stock is worth about 39% less than it was on November 17, 2010, when the company went public at $33.00/share. However, during the intervening time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen by almost 20%, so GM shares have lost 49% of their value relative to the Dow.

Fridays close $28.18 - they should be out of business along with GE and Chrysler (add => BOA, Chase, Citi). Every time an Ally Bank commercial comes on the business channel I want to puke. With Govco as an owne,r most assuredly price manipulation is in play.
That U.S. tax payers so willingly support either Bama or GM in this theft is astonishing. My god we bought 60% of the company so GM could continue to port it's manufacturing to China. I would not drive one of their piles of **** if it were given to me.
