Ear Plugs? Too Late. My ears have been "ringing" for the past 10 years or so. 45 years of jet engines, noisy shops, rocket engines, sprint cars and the like not to mention the damn unmuffled model engines since I was a kid have finally gotten to my ears. Now I need the engine and wind noise to blank out the ringing. Makes the ride more enjoyable. Gotta go, I think the phone is ringing.

Danr55 08-25-2014 12:36 PM

Hi Grumpy.. Glad to hear from you..

DrDuc 08-25-2014 05:20 PM

My daughter is a musician and bought some ear plugs for me that block the loud noises and leave some hearing ability. Lets me hear the traffic but stops the loud pipes I have plus the wind noise. It really does help your hearing of traffic around you. Sorry, Dan, I would have shown them to you on the ride if I'd known. Several hours of Cobra Pipes can cause permanent hearing loss!

Bob Broberg SPF667 460BB 08-25-2014 05:47 PM

I can testify to Grumpy Bob's hearing loss but he has overcome most of it and can carry an intelligent conversation. Actually Bob knows a lot about a lot, like Danr. Try him.
I have never been a fan of ear plugs except at the range with low calibers. For my many long distance runs of over 500 miles per day and usually alone I use earpods connected to my iphone for music. Mostly Sugerman. LOL It's not the pipes, it's the wind buffeting. Unless you are Karl. Did I miss anyone?

Bob, Sugerman can make you deaf. Look at Scotty. He can't hear anything Sandy says.

Karl Bebout 08-25-2014 08:46 PM

'way too late. Lotsa loud rock n roll, shoot-em-up-bang-bang, race cars, work in a loud factory (decades ago), and getting wacked flush on my right ear with a racquet ball. Deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other. My hearing aids do have a noise cancellation feature that helps a bunch but generally, I just smile and nod and enjoy my barking Rat motor.

You're almost right Bob, whilst the scale is logarithmic, the sound energy doubles with every three point increase. :)

I used an intercom with Peltor noise cancelling headsets. They're much more effective than earplugs and allow me to listen to music, satnav, answer my telephone and have a comfortable and easy conversation with my passenger.

Can I please see the hands of everyone who believes that Karl actually worked at some point in his life?

Thank you. Karl, not many hands!

mikiec 08-26-2014 10:19 AM

Karl, worked? When? We want proof

scootter 08-26-2014 01:23 PM

I had my ear plugs specifically made for me by an audiologist. They are skin colored and you push them in and you really can't even see them. Problem is that my hearing is so bad for a variety of reasons, that I have a hard time hearing sirens. My wife has to hit me when she hears them!! The other thing I have noticed that even with ear plugs, the buffeting of the wind at freeway speed still hurts my ears. So i usually wear a beanie.

I think it was when they went from stone tablets to papyrus paper.

Karl Bebout 08-26-2014 07:32 PM

Slaved, I did....slaved! Even back in my factory days, I also worked 32-40 hours a week in a gas station. Those $2/hr. jobs were scarce. Good excuse to get out of the house and the extra money sure came in handy.

Thank GOD I got over all that and dropped down to only 11-12 hour days for a few decades and now, this retirement thingy is certainly the best job I ever had!

Based on his work on the cobra, Yup he was.

Paul, some questions... Im interested in a better solution than foam ear plugs.
Those look like 'in ear' headsets, do you not get sore ears after a while?
Is the noise cancelling aspect built into the starcom box?
Do you wear these under a helmet (F/F or Open-Face) or 'as-is' ?

Kevin

FatBoy 08-27-2014 11:57 AM

Hi Kevin,

The headsets aren't shown on the website, but they're Peltor headsets that are modified by Starcom1 for their units. They're "over ear" style and look like the headsets you see in the F1 pit lane and are pretty comfortable, although it is nice to take them off for a while after really long periods e.g. driving down to Le Mans.
However, the difference they make while driving far outweighs any minor comfort issues.
The noise cancelling is part of the Starcom1 Digital unit.
I also have the Bluetooth module and the noise suppression unit because my MSD ignition was causing a buzz. I can even listen to and reply to text messages just by speaking.
The sound quality is very good even at speed. I can talk on the phone, hands free of course, and the other person isn't even aware I'm driving, let alone in the Cobra with no roof.

now that looks cool. It would be great to be able to hold a conversation without yelling- how well do they work for that?

xlr8tr 08-27-2014 04:51 PM

sorry missed your post above, question answered!

Very well. I have a friend who has completely lost her voice and can only speak in a whisper and I was able to hold a conversation with her whilst driving at reasonably high speeds in France last month.
As well as noise cancellation, the volume automatically adjusts with varying ambient noise levels.

Paul
