Well Sheeeeet, Robert. Thank god, I'm gainfully Unemployed so a job's responsibilities don't get in the way of my play time. Laughlin is also coming right up and while its nowhere near the twisty curvy drive, still a good time. Are you going to try to make that one?

So does that mean your car is back together and running well...??? or running well enough to make the Coronado Trail?

Karl, just being honest here, don't count your chickens on the Laughlin Trip. There are only 4 rooms that have been reserved at the Riverside from AZ members for the trip AND Dan Shinn and I cannot attend. Only 1 room from the California delagation and that's Dave Martin. My original plan for the 3rd weekend got changed to the 4th weekend in October and threw a wrench into my schedule. I have asked Dave to ponder cancellation. Will announce ASAP.

I just checked on closures east of Superior. According to what I read, it may be slow for about 4.5 miles but probably not on the weekend. May be restricted on one lane each way. I suggest we press ahead. Anyone coming east on the 202, be advised that it is closed at Dobson from 2200 hrs. Friday nite until 0500 hrs Monday morning, so take an alternate route.

Getting closer to getting running. Should finish today, if I don't have any more surprises. Did learn that the length of the pin on the front of the cam, does matter, Mesa Mike. Ha. If bad luck strikes again, I'll be riding with either Bob or Superstition Bill.

We started out nicely. 11 cars out of Phoenix and Alliedog out of Tucson. We all got to Cliffton with some minor battery issues in Safford, but we all made it. That's where the good news ... well. Decide for your self. We started up the hill and I made a wrong turn.. Scotty and Benny(Varmint) went racing by and stopped about 4 miles up to admire the scenery. We scooted by them and started into the serious curves behind Allliedog.. About 1/3 or the way up, he pulls over and waves everyone by. Thinking since he's waving they are stopping to admire the scenery or something, we jet right past and commence the serious part of the climb. Made it all the way to Hanniigan Meadow and were waiting for mor cars when a motorcycle guy came by and says "One of your cars is broken down back down the mountain. So we start counting noses. Scotty, Varmint and Superstition Bill are the MIA's. Since the guy described the broken car as being "kind of red" we knew it was Bill. A while later, Scotty and Varmint show up with Karl in tow and relate about how Bills car lost all electricity. He was with a DPS officer and waiting for a tow truck. I'm not sure that Karl was intended to make the run up Coronado Trail. Must be some old curse or something. So.. we had a great trip and a good time. Sorry you missed it..

Summary
Great trip! Lots of spirited driving. We had 11 cobras all the way to Safford. I had to buy a new Optima Redtop there but only took 10 minutes and caught up at Morenci Fuel stop before the hill climb. Old one was purchased in March of 2008. Yes, Dan took the same wrong turn as last year but some of us recognized it and kept going. About 500 turns later at Hannigan Meadows Lodge lunch, we discovered some missing cobras. A crotch rocket biker told us he saw one broken down and others giving moral support. Of course it was the one Karl was riding in. Must be the “KINX” (Karl jinx.) Made it to the motel for some parking lot fun and music managed by Scotty. Nice bar setup, I did most of a donut with my cobra, most went to dinner, I went to sleep. Departed Sunday morning with Dan Ratti at 7am but Hector beat us out. Ran into rain from Heber to south of Payson. Got home 11:10am, 249 miles from motel. Hands and arms sore. Need rest.
11 cobras:
Al & Patty Mike & Steve
Dan & Adriana Dan Ratti
Gary & Vicki Jim Cook
Mesa Bill & Karl Bob Broberg
Scotty Dr Bruce & Karate guest
Benny (Varmit)
AZ Bob

What a great trip this was.
Lot's of driving in a short period of time.
Hope to do it again next year even though Danr55 says he's leaving us after x-mass to become more uppity, I guess.

ARGH!!! How frustrating for Superstition Bill. His battery gave a good arc but there wasn't juice anywhere else. Hopefully, the problem is just a faulty shut off switch. Bill got towed off the mountain and then his step son came to Thatcher to trailer him the rest of the way home. When Scotty dropped me off at Bill's, the car had not gotten up on the lift yet, so no word on the cause. I thoroughly enjoyed riding with Scotty, after Bill's taxi died. Scotty's little 302 crate engine puts out nice power and he likes to wind it out. I really appreciated his providing transportation for me and am glad he enjoyed the Salt River Canyon. We left Springerville about 7:30, had a good breakfast in Showlow, stopped in Globe for gas for Bennie's monster, and got to Bill's, at the very base of the Superstition Mtn. about 11:15. Heck of a nice weekend. SOMEDAY, I'll even get to drive the whole route, myself.

Karlos-
As soon as you have your car running and ironed out, we need to schedule "Coronado- Take Two"
Since I missed out on this run (I ended up working almost 14 hours Saturday - Suckaroo ) I'm going to take the opportunity to drop my car's fuel tank and have a baffle installed in it - Whenever I get hard on the throttle with less than half a tank, the fuel pump pickup goes dry and my engine cuts out - it's very annoying.

Guys
Thanks for letting a Cali guy tag along. To be honest it was one of the best Cobra runs I've been on. I was good to be on a fresh set of unexplored roads, with beautiful scenery. Got to do some sustained high speed sprints, some tight twisties, plus some sweepers that could handle speeds of 115. They were perfectly timed at that speed and it felt like dancing with the car. Loved it. I had a blast from the time I arrived at Scott's house until I got got back. Can ran flawlessly. She was quite thirsty at those speeds. Think my lowest mpg was 9, and highest was 13 coming down through salt river canyon. The Sat nite festivities were outstanding.
Hope you guys will have me back next time, and someday would love to return the favor by have you come over and taste some of our twisites.
p.s. GTUSUM says she had a great time as well and thanks you for the work out.

Wanting to sell, and actually getting it done, especially for big bucks, may take quite a while, unless one is lucky enough to find just that "right" buyer. Maybe Danr is thinking of selling to celebrate his 80th birthday? I'm just sayin.

I got my car home safe as well as pretty smoothly considering the distance and logistics. The drug enforcement/sheriff deputy was very nice to stay as long as he did. We talked football and such. He had to leave for a call in the valley but called back three times to make sure the tow truck guy found me. It was the same guy and his son who picked up Karl's car last year. Which is funny because he was a back up call because the first one broke down before he got to me. We had some great conversation. He is a racer and hot rod guy. My son met me at Thatcher at the Taco Bell. There must have been twenty people stopping by to look and ask questions about the roadster. If I get lonely, I know where to go to get some attention!
The car is in the garage. I may have found the root cause of the electrical problem. I had the pos and neg battery cables running parallel and touching. That probably was not best practice so that will be changed. I think the real cause was me not getting the thumb screw on the positive terminal real tight. It may have created a cascade effect of heat/resistance along the cables especially since they were laying side by side. Never had a problem before but this was aggrevated I guess. So I will change the pos to a welding cable for less resistance and run them far apart (left and right side of trans tunnel). I checked all the wiring and the cut off switch was not bad (volt meter). So as the dominos fell along the way, I guess the computer overheated to the point it just shut itself off. It has a breaker as well. It wouldn't have been safe to operate it after the cables were overheated anyway. So I was not fixing that problem on the side of the road even if I had a jack. If my ECC-IV PCM fried itself, I don't care as I will be replacing it anyway with a new tunable one. I'm just glad I didn't fry my harness during the overheating.
Glad you guys had a good time on the rest of the run. I will try again next year. Special thanks to Scotty and Bennie for stopping for us and rescuing Karl. I think he probably would have cried if he had to back track two years in a row.
See you later,
WEK.

Dan already got a pretty solid offer from Alidog for a Chevy orange cobra with a truck motor in it.
