I use a carter in-line 15 psi fuel pump for my NOS system, stepped down to 10psi with Holley regulator and safety cut-off at 4.5 psi. If my Holley Blue ever quits again, I can steal the Carter to get me home. (Or call AAA.)

Depends how nostalgic or original you want to make it.
Like my SW 240A pumps, gutted and bored out to accommadate two modern electric inline fuel pumps:

I can sympathize Scotty. Thinking about changing mine too. I have a Holley red back at the tank and a mechanical pump (fed by the electric pump, so in series, with a return line). The electric pump sounds like a blender. If my fuel level is below 1/4 tank I see some pressure drop if I really get into the throttle. So either the pumps aren't keeping up or I have some clogging in the filter. In any event I can't see the electric pump lasting too long based on how it sounds.

Mike, don't you have FI on that monster? I've always thought they required considerably higher pressure than carbs. If the electric pump can generate the high pressure, wouldn't then running through a mechanical pump lower that pressure by restriction? My confuzzzion runs rampant.

Those Holley blue and red pumps (rotary vane) always are loud, especially when dead headed. They don't like it (noise, short life, vapor lock) and neither do most electric pumps. I am running a Holley gerotor with a bypass on it. Runs very quiet. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-12-125/overview/
A good mechanical pump should work fine too with a carburetor. Just depends upon what poison you want.

In tank
Gordon Levy hooked me up with a 345 lph in tank pump, for Mustang tank. Supports 600 hp, runs cooler and quieter. Cannot speak to reliability, only about 1500 miles on mine.
Good luck

I have a Holley Gerator type pump as well. 5+ years and no problems. Went through 2 vain type pumps before I tried this one. It feeds a Quikfuel 780 too.
You can still hear it but much quieter than the old red ones.

The original 427's, including S/C and Race cars all ran mechanical fuel pumps. The twin SW pumps fitted to the S/C and Race Cobras were only for priming and reserve.
If mechanical pumps were good enough then, there's no reason to think that they're not good enough now.

+1
I know that mine doesn't have the cam eccentric. In many rebuilds that are planning on using an electric pump, the eccentric is not installed on the cam.
I installed a Walbro in-take retrofit pump from TanksInc. Quieter than external but still noticeable.

My 289 was vapor locking in hot weather due to thermal soakback after starting after sitting for a short time and a very knowledgeable friend that specializes in the original Thunderbirds ( my previous car) suggested an inexpensive Carquest pump back near the tank. I switch it on for startup when cold to fill the bowls and leave it on longer if the engine is hot. If it ever vaporlocks I can switch it on to clear it. Haven't had any problems since, so far.
The Carquest pump is an Airtex E8016S and is available many places for about $25.

I've had a blue Holley for a while now....sometimes it does get noisy, but it does go away.
Mine is dead headed, so with a return it may be quieter.

Funny, I have a Blue Holley, sometimes it's real noisy and other times very quiet, depends on how often I change my hearing aid batteries!
