Put a new fuel filter and fixed a poor negative ground on Friday and it was running great. Was on my way out to the picnic and the clutch pedal got closer and closer to the floor until it stopped working at all. Pulled off the highway just passed Ft McDowell Casino and didn't find any leaks so called for a tow. All the nice members who drove by stopped and asked if they could help- nothing to do. Did meet some people I hadn't met before. Thanks to everyone who stopped and to Bruce B for his input via phone. One of my past employee's dad owns All Over Towing company so they had a truck out very quickly and took it over to Charlie's. He was there working on a car so I dropped it off and put it indoors. Will hopefully have it back in a day or two. Seems to be the clutch master or slave. With luck, it should be running soon and ready for Route 66. Sorry I missed the picnic- hope you all had fun! Still waiting to hear if Brown's will make good on breaking the tranny.

Sorry to hear about your clutch Bruce. I thought you would be right behind me and was surprised to hear you weren't going to make it. Hopefully it will be an easy replacement of the master or slave cylinder and you're on your way again soon.

We missed you Bruce. Hope to see your baby by Tuesday dinner. Slave cylinder replacement is not difficult, master is. Still, need time to obtain.

Clutch cylinder issues? Sounds vaguely familiar.

You don't need no stinkin' hydraulic clutch! All ya need is a powerful left thigh muscle!

If the master is what went bad, then just replace them both.
If the master goes out, then it's only a matter of time before the slave goes, too; so it's cheap insurance to just pay the extra $150 or so in parts and labor to replace them together.
if it was just the slave that went out, and the master is still ok, then you can probably get away with just replacing the slave alone, and doing a good flush out on the system.
That's free advice, Doc... and worth every penny

I carry a spare slave cylinder and brake fluid in the trunk. Ya never know and I don't want to have to stay an extra day or two in some far away, place like Santa Cruz.

Thanks for all the tips. The slave was OK ( fairly new) but the master needed replacing. Drove it around today and runs great. Now to get it ready for Route 66. Can't think of anything else that can go wrong! (Hopefully!)

Why, yes I do have a spare alternator since I replaced the one I bought in CA last fall. It is fine, just not enough output found my GPS speedo. (And a fuel pump, some fuel line and clamps, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter and a fuel pump, Dist gear, Fuses and bulbs) I've thought about carrying a nice SBC in the trunk to get me home, if the SBF dies.

Bruce, I'm so glad that you are doing your best to improve da Donald's economy as well as boost Charile's business. A couple more customers like you and he'll not have to worry about making his rent.

Well, Karl, it all started with broken windshields. If mechanics didn't keep breaking things (wrong oil=new engine, mechanic who can't shift= broken trans) the only thing I'd have had done was a clutch master and two windshields. (Other than some body work from hitting a lawn chair on the 101). That's not too bad for a 15 yr old kit car, I suppose.?
