CAL COAST part 2
Scottie, the intrepid, and I are heading West again. This year's odyssey won't be structured, at all. Very few specific destinations other than avoiding LA, staying a night or two with James and Kendra in Pismo, maybe hitting Lillian's, in Santa Cruz, and seeing as much coastal area as we can.
Might even get up to Vancouver, depending on the weather and if our bodies can stand it. We tentatively plan on leaving Tuesday, 09/05, to miss the Labor Day traffic and should return Friday/Saturday, 09/14-15ish.
Anyone else interested? More the merrier.
I WANNA DRIVE!

Are you aware of the California Hwy 1 closure in the Big Sur area ? The California DOT website will give you specifics, but basically it is closed from about Cambria to Carmel. I rode my motorcycle up the coast in June and had to do a detour around the closure. Just an FYI in case you weren't aware of the situation.

The is Ted. I did remember the big slide a few months ago that took out some of the mountain side and the road. The picture I saw looked like it'll be quite a while before that gets fixed. That section of Hwy 1 is beautiful but last year, Scottie and I found the area North of SF to be even more of a driving challenge. We both were pretty well whipped by the time we stopped at Ft. Bragg. No ps and no pb makes playing Terry Roadrace exhausting.

Also note that some of H-1 north of SFO is closed in sections.

Mark Moto One, Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to keep an eye on the CA highway status site on a daily basis. Fortunately, we don't have any set itinerary and we'll adjust whenever necessary. We're just going for a drive.
PHX Mike, I understand that some of youse guys are still employed and that taking off a couple weeks is pretty much of a strain, especially if you have other family member to consider. Keep working, keep paying those taxes, I'll enjoy my 'UGE SS benefits. This retirement thingy is the best job I ever had but don't wish your life away.

Robert, I knew better than to count on you for this little drive. You've got not only the work thingy but also horsies and family stuff to deal with.
Hope you'll be able to do the Coronado Trail with us.

I'd love to take the trip, but I still work for a living! I did take the Boss over to the car show yesterday and saw your car, but not you. Left when it started getting hot and muggy, which was earlier than usual.

We're sorta planning on overnight in the beauteous Barstow, but if we're not too toasted from crossing the desert, may push farther west. Our drive on to Shell Beach will be pretty minimal but I've talked to James and Kendra and we have lodgings with them for Wednesday night. We'll stay only one night and then get Northbound. We're aware of the Hwy 1 closures and delays and will just take detours over to the 101, whenever we have to.
Since there is just two of us, I have not bothered to make up any sort of itinerary or motel reservations, other than with James. We'll wing it, driving and stopping whenever and wherever the the mood hits us. The only planned stop will be to see Scottie's friends in Salem. Looking forward to driving. Getting sodomized by CA's gas prices...not so much.

Good luck guys and be safe. I wish I could spare the time I would be tempted to bring my GTI and just load it up as a spare parts/food/beverage vehicle. Would still be a fun drive
