Question Hersh - how many miles on the GT40 now???

Hi Hersh,
I've enjoyed seeing all your photos of the GT40 with various racers and other celebrities, and heard of it's exploits at the racetrack. I'm wondering if you've had much of a chance to get it out on the road much, just clocking up cruising highway miles and enjoying the results of all your hard work?

Also, has the tire rubber worn off the driveway yet ???

Talking

Hi Craig,
Well, I have about 3000 miles on the car so far. I felt that 2000 miles was a good shake down time.
Jay eludes to my drive to the Bondurant school to meet them when they were in town. On the way there I took a road that is straight and long with little or no traffic. I decided to open her up a bit and see how she handles. It didn't take long to get her up to about 150MPH. About the time I started to let off a coyote decided that he wanted to cross the road. I steered as far right as I could and just missed him with my left front. My right rear left the pavement and things got real scary fast. The Gt's rear went slightly right then it started back. I had the good sense not to hit the brakes but gassed it a little to straighten her out. I got it back and slowed down to a crawl. I was so nervous I couldn't stop shaking. When I got to the track I was still shaking and it was hard not to think about how lucky I was. No more highspeed desert road runs for me.. I keep seeing that damn coyote coming out of the brush.
I still have sufficient tire rubber but it got worn fast when Bob Bondurant drove it on the track last. He really gave it a work out.

Those Yokohama auto-x tires provide great traction. But after a good track run you can actually SEE the how much rubber was used up that day!

Hersh...

I'm not sure I want to ride with you again....

1st, it was the attack of the Killer Tumbleweeds..

Now a coyote....

Big question did you get it sideways? Ask Jerry about going sideways up an access ramp.

Mike

Hersh - at least the kangaroos jump pretty high over here. Your GT would likely go underneath one if it jumped at the right time. Couldn't say the same about the Durango, but I wouldn't want to be in it at 150+ anyway..... Wow, glad you kept it all together. That could have been nasty.

3000 miles shows that you're obviously getting some good use out of it already. Nothing like Hal Copple's SPF, and still a fair way short of your Cobra, but pretty good nonetheless !

Tumbleweeds ?

See you,

Craig

Sideways is fun as long as there are no walls or ditches in sight. So what did Bob Bondurant say about the car? scott

Thumbs up

Scott,
I went back and copied this from the post I made a couple weeks ago or so. I asked Bob after he came off the track as to what he thought, he said that it's great, don't change a thing. This was after he had driven it the first time and then Gordon set it up a little better than what it was when he first drove it. The brakes still need some attention as they are spongy on the first pump. I think it needs a residual valve.

The exellent adventure continues....
Jay and Kieth asked me to post here and say HI ! to all of you as he won't be able to post tonight. He said that he would make a full report with photos sometime tomorrow. They were having a problem with the throw out bearing on the ZR1 and stopped at my home to use the lift. They commenced to tell me all about the Players Run. I must admit that it still sounded to good to be true. After the inspection on the vette it was decided to go ahead and drive it as the bearing was not in danger of going out but was making a little noise. It was decided to fix it after the run.
Before they left the house they invited me to come out and see for myself that this Run was legit. I was very hesitant but they call me again this morning and said to get my arse out there. So I grabbed my camera and headed over to the Bondurant school in the GT40.this is where all of the Players Run participates were to meet . This was one of their scheduled stops.
Upon my arrival I went and parked in the general publics lot.
As I was exiting the car , Jay and several others were yelling at me to get that car over with all the others. Well, I figured it best to comply. I started to park in a open spot near a BMW and they said "NO, you park over there next to that F40 Ferrari. I backup and slipped in next to the beautiful red F40. As I was exiting the car Bob Bondurant walked over and met me. He asked if he could take the GT around the track. Of course I say sure! He then gets in and hits the track. after a few laps he really pours it on and they get him doing 112 in the small straight away. WOW!
As we are standing there Jay then introduces me to another fine Lemans winner , Roland Linder. What a neat guy. He was also on the Players Run staff. Most of these good folks are from Europe here on Holiday with their cars. They all were very nice and friendly. I also met Marcus Lexx. He is the one that started this event. I must say that he is a very friendly and courteous young man. He is from Germany and speaks english very well. He was everywhere making sure that everyone was enjoying the event .
After a while Bob and Roland was on the track. Bob was now in one of his Vettes. At this point several of the people asked that I drive my car on the track. I politely refused but they insisted so on with a borrowed helmet and off I went. I took off and found myself behind these two great drivers. A little intimadating to say the least. But here I was staying up real good for a few laps....then just when I thought this was kinda easy , both took off like they were driving jets. It was another one of those reminders as to why I don't do this for a living. But to say I was exited would be an under statement. I later pitted and gave a ride to several people with video cameras.
After the track event we all had a great lunch and Bob, along with Roland, talked of their careers in racing.
I must admit that these Players Run folks know how to have a good time. Eating humble pie has never been this much fun.
It's a pretty awsome thing to walk among a bunch of cars that cost as much as my house. Lambos, Beemers, Porches, and ferraris. I was in car heaven.
A great day for sure and I hated to see it end. There are a few pictures in my photo gallery.

Hersh
