Thumbs up My thoughts, exactly, Charlie....

I can't recall if it was on a J&D album, or not, but I seem to recall it was a side 'B' 45...but, then again...so many years, so many dead brain cells... I have truly become one of the people my parents warned me about... "Yo...far out, Dude...did you see that gnarly kickout at the end of that tube...man, that ho-dad's B!TCHIN'!"

Lemme do some research and I'll post what I turn up....hey, TURN UP.....get it....?

Okay...with feeling now...EVERYONE...

"I took my Cobra out to the track...
Hitched to the back of my Cadillac.
Everyone was there just a-waitin' for me,
There were plenty of Sting Rays and X-K-E's!"

Unhappy Well , hell....now you've got ME doubtin' myself...

.. I just looked at severl Jan and Dean websites that list their complete - at least according to their webmasters - catalogue of recordings, and I can't find "Hey, Little Cobra". Searching by the title nets me thousands and thousands of hits by the Rip Chords, in 1963, but none by Jan and Dean - at least as far as I was willing to look.

Still...I'm pretty sure the version I have of "Hey Little Cobra" is by Jan and Dean. I also have the Rip Chords original version.

Man...you've got me doubting myself now...!

Default I Know, I know

To the best of my impecable knowledge of 50's & 60's "rock 'n roll" and "surfer music" (I'm older than Freddie) it was definitely the "Rip Chords" and the year was mid 60's.
Now the secret is out as to why I bought the Escalade.

You guys may be getting alittle confused with "Deadman's Curve," of Jan and Dean Fame.

Mid-60's...hell, Terry, is that the closest you can get..? How 'bout November-December 1965, and the Rip Chords version went to #1 on January 17, 1966. It was bumped by the Beatles the following week.

"..Impecable knowledge..." indeed...

But, I listened to both versions again last night. There IS a difference between the two, and the one labeled "Jan & Dean" definitely sounds like them. I'm convinced it's them, but I can't find where it was ever released...at least, so far. But, I hate to admit defeat, so I'll keep looking until I find the evidence, or just finally decide the song I have is mislabeled.

Hey...don't be shy out there, folks...if anyone has any information about Jan & Dean doing "Hey, Little Cobra"...sing out....(HEY - "sing out"....get it?)

Not to rub it in or anything, but I wasn't even born until 1972 , so I have no idea what all this lingo is about. 45? Album? Huh? I thought that was the Beach Boys at the Fling!! I'll ask my father, maybe he knows.

OK, in reality, I don't listen to modern music. I'm a fan mostly of the late '60's and early '70's music, but I don't think many people remember that era either, do they?

Thumbs up Right on

FF,
You are "SO RIGHT" Jan.17th is correct, I just wasn't sure '65 or '66.
When I saw the date I remembered:

The car: '66 Shelby GT350 (red w/ white stripes)
The stero: Learjet 8 track
The girlfriend (big hooters I might add)
(lustfully referred to as Mustang Sally)

How could I forget

DAMN, THOSE WHERE THE DAYS

TL
ps. I was dating Carol at the same time as Sally.

and look where it got me now

pss. I ordered the Goodyear slicks yesterday

According to 'The Billboard Book of Top Forty Hits' The Rip Chords rendition of 'Hey Little Cobra' was on the charts for 11 weeks topping out at #4 on 1/4/64

I'm still looking for any info to verify that there was a Jan and Dean version...

Default Hey School Boy!

Klayfish,
Born 1972?
My god, you're hardly out of school

Some believe that Flying Freddie has several illegitimate children older than you. Age not be a deciding factor here.

But I Know Better. In 1972 he thought "IT" was only used to relieve one's self after too many beers.

Now where is that stack of old 8-tracks.

Terry...

Freddie still believes IT"S only purpose is to get rid of excess beer...

While I can't help Freddie's loss of memory and aging process, I can help him at the bar to remember that it twas *I* that bought the last round... everytime. He seems grateful of not missing his turn... everytime. ;-)

Here is the only bonafide data I have on the "Hey Little Cobra" saga...
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"Hey, Little Cobra" was written by Carol Conner in 1964. It has been said that she wrote "Hey, Little Cobra right after she visited Shelby American and bought a Cobra for herself.

"Hey Little Cobra was recorded and released in 1964. The artists making "Hey Little Cobra" were called "the Rip Chords", which consisted of lead singers Bruce Johnston and Terry Day (Melcher). Both played with other surf song groups like the Beach Boys as well as under many different named groups of their own.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I beleive others passed through the ripchords band as "guests" and shared singers on occasion.

I would suggest simply calling them up and asking them about the history! I'll bet Ed has their number! And they seemed like some real friendly down to Earth guys... that's for SURE!

Just dug up some more info on the RipChords vertifying the above...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Rip Chords are known for their 1964 million-seller smash hit "Hey Little Cobra" and their chart hits "Three Window Coupe," "Here I Stand," "Gone," "409" and "Red Hot Roadster" from the Beach Movie "A Swingin' Simmer."

Produced by the team of Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnston, the 60's Rip Chords consisted of Phil Stewart, Rich Rotkin and Arnie Marus. Ernie Bringus joined the group for a short time but all personal appearances were by Phil, Rich and Arnie.

The Rip Chords today consist of Richie Rotkin (vocals and percussion), Bob Rush (bass, vocals, musical director), Mitchell Schecter (lead guitar, vocals, vocal director), Fred Brog (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Walter Slinkard (drums, vocals) and Bobby Scammell (keyboards, vocals). Arnie Marcus (bongos, percussion, vocals) joins the guys onstage for some of the shows).
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And here is a link to the RipChords site...
http://www.ripchords.net/home_page.htm

I also discovered Carol Conner's site as well (not much of interest there)...
http://www.carolconnors.com/main.htm

And a Jan & Dean biography, but with no mention of the HLC song...
http://www.jananddean.com/bio.html

Finally, the discography of their recordings, also with no mention of HLC...
http://www.jananddean.com/disco.html

PS... I *did* happen to find a current photo of our very own Gary Osborne and his wife Sue psoing on stage at the DV-fling with the Ripchords circa June-03!

I have asked the Jan and Dean fan club for an answer to our question.

Waiting for a reply.

Well if it helps, that mp3 you emailed to me had the following information in it: 25 Juke Box Greats Vol 4.

I just can't tell if the version is different than the Ripcords version.

Yet another Cobra mystery
