Engine sounds from Arizona Cobras Anniversary Party
Well, a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who helped with my project.
(Before I forget, a couple of the files did not record clearly, so if you volunteered but you don't hear your engine here, I apologize.)
So on with the experiment...
While you can definitely tell more difference when you are there in person, I believe you will hear 8 distinctively different engine sounds here.
I'll even make it easy for you -- in no particular order, here is a list of the volunteers' engines -- see if you can match them up with the sound files:
347 stroker, 542 Chevy - far from stock, stock 302, 468 w/nitrous owner,
429, 390 FE, 460 and a Cleveland.
Sound file 1
Sound file 2
Sound file 3
Sound file 4
Sound file 5
Sound file 6
Sound file 7
Sound file 8
Of course, I realize that displacement, cam, exhaust and other things come in to play, but this was all for fun anyway. I came away with some favorites, but didn't get too surprised.
Have fun with them and see what you think!
Ben

Hi Ben,
1 maybe a big block chevy?
I can't tell 2, maybe a 302
Boy do I recognize 3. That's a broken 460
4 sounds like a 460 without mufflers
5 i'd guess a Cleveland with low idle
6 maybe Brian's Nascar sounding 429?
7 & 8 maybe both 302s?
Broken Bob

#6 sounds like it has some blower pulley whine going on. My guess is that may be the Chevy that is "far from stock".

Number 6 has a gear drive and is not the chebie. No gear drive on the Chevy as a second clue. I think there are 2 with gear drives if I remember correctly, 1 noisey and 1 almost quite.

#3 sounds suspiciously like the Dodge Neon v-tec Type-R that drives by my house everyday.
Have a good one,
Dan

You guys are funny. Some guesses are correct. (And no fair if you built the engine... GORDON )
Keep trying -- we'll see if someone can get all of them.

Ben,
I was not sure if you were still filming or not but with a little (very little) coaxing just had to play a bit and smoke the tires. Yes I do think I have my motor picked out but must admit to having no clue about the other big blocks. The ones with gear drives are easy to pick out. I know that I have #3 for sure.

Yeah --- #3 is a dead giveaway. Before Saturday he told me he'd do it, so I "forced" him into it. Funny guy that Bob...

Varoooommmm.................
Well it sure is hard to match up the motors, but...
# 3 is a BB Ford (Bob B. broken special in need of repair, and a new set of pipes )
# 6 sounds like it is running low on Oil
Had a great time, see ya soon..
Keep it above 100

I think the winey, as in a good merlot, is the chevy and I agree with Gordon on # 4 and at the event the one before to the left of me was getting on it to. He had numbers on the car so whoever remembers that car, you can guess it.

Scott -- I'm so bummed you weren't able to make it. Yours is definitely one car I'd really like to see -- and hear -- more of!
Well, so far, Bob was pretty close, and Mike even closer -- but no one has them all right so far... I guess that makes sense since you two have probably seen these cars in person more than most of the rest of us.
I also wonder if your mental perceptions are influencing your guesses -- like "a Cleveland should sound like this...". (That's a hint for you Mike...).
I also would have to say that the experiment was a success in the fact that all eight engines sound very different -- at least to me. Of course, when I played them for my wife last night, she just kind of looked at me with that "whatever makes you happy, honey" look.

Oh -- one more hint -- I think it helps to turn the volume up a bit when you are listening to the sound clips. Really.
