Default Anybody done a 514

I thought it would be nice to ask if anyone has done a 514 and let them tell what it resulted in. I have read too much comparison data and I am confused. It gets down to "what will you be happy with; what am I going to use the thing for; am I going to race; weight v cornering etc. I want the big boy but I want to use pump gas, not race gas unless I go to the track. If someone actually did put one of these babies in their car, I would like to know what not to do.

Lightbulb Seems you have a misconception...

The 514 has BIG "lungs" and VERY low compression.. mine runs on pump regular.. in fact premium is too much....it does not like it

Real world compression is 8.9 to 1 (subtract 1 for the aluminum heads)

Hello Fitz,

If you use the Search selection at the top of this page with "ford and crate and motor" or something similar, you would come up with results like this:

Crate motor thread

Cool Tom...

My motor is dyno-ing today or tommorrow.. with the carb for break-in... then after I get her road-worthy a mechanic buddy and I are going to install the Holly EFI system.. then will truck her to a specialty shop north of here for chassi dyno and tuning.. they know all about the pro-jection system and have their own software ready.. they will be spending an entire day tuning her...will report on results when it's done!

Fitz, there are many 514s installed in Superformance cars. Their owners are pretty vociferous on the SCOF forum. It's a great motor. If I were to replace my 460 that's the way I would go. I have an old 1972 short block bored a bit and 10 to 1 compression with a 114 degree cam lobe separation (not "lopey") and not radical cam lift and duration. My motor can run all day long on pump premium. The new 514 with the SCJ heads rated at 550hp has 110 degree (lopey) but should hold up fine. I get 15 to 17mpg on trips.

Default OH YEA, 514!!

Mine seems to be as bulletproof as the 302. Of course I dont need to beat on it to get going. Just Idling it hauls Balls! Does anyone know who makes the biggest hydraulic cam for this block? This winter I plan on adding another supercharger to the other side and run them both through a MONSTER intercooler.
