Default Emissions

Livng in Arizona, I have to have my Cobra pass emissions. This year they really tighten up the emissions standards, which I had passed the previous 6 years. I replaced the Barry Grant 750 carb with a new Holley 650 double pumper, hoping that it would run cleaner. I can't get the car to pass the loaded (35 MPH) test for Carbon Monoxide, but does pass it at idle. On the Hydrocarbons test it fails at idle but passes on the loaded test. I'm running a 351 Cleveland on a Weiand xcelorator maniford. I've bumped the timing up 26 degrees BTDC (suggested by tech support at Barry Grant). Replaced the plugs and plug wires. I'm sort of at a loss where to go next? Any suggestions?

Bill

Bill, go down to the DMV and re-register your Cobra as a 1965 Ford Roadster like the rest of us. The DVM on the east side , east of Scottsdale about two miles and north of I-202 about two miles is the place that you might try. They do a lot of Cobra registrations there. Contact some of the Phoenix guys for their recommandation. Good luck, John

Bill,

I brought mine in from out of state and went down a couple of months ago to the DMV, West of Greenfield, between US 60 and Baseline, in Mesa. The guys at the inspection area knew what to call it and it is now a 66 Cobra. No emissions. Gordon Levy recommended this station to me and has done some of his cars there.

Mine used to be a 92 assembled vehicle in Texas. I only required the stage 1 inspection, since it had been titled before.

If you insist on passing the silly smog test, heres what I always did with my low 12 second, BBC, roller cam, 11:1 CR, 850 puddledumper, 73 street Vette... I just leave it unregistered now that I have the Cobra.

Rebuild Carb and jet so lean it drives like sh!t.
New plug wires, cap rotor, and plugs.
Recurve distributor for about 20 deg BTC at idle and 40 deg BTC at cruise. (Drive real carefully to the smog station).
Add about 1 gal rubbing alcohol to about 4-5 gal of gas.

This usually did it for me...

Good luck
