Default Michigan to Arizona

Recently relocated from the motorcity to Chandler and would like to tap into leasons learned here about registering SPF1557 here. In Michigan, I had to go the "assembled vehicle" route which titled it as a 2003. The plate is up for renewal November and thought about another year with a MI plate (still have a resisdence in MI). Appreciate any thoughts, and suggestions.

Hello msinghof,
Welcome to the DRY HEAT and always good to have another snake in town. Add a few photos so we can see your Toy. We have annual Xmas party comming up soon. Am sure Mikiec will jump on board soon or send him a line to get setup with email list and events etc...
Registration ? I offer no direction as to Should you change now or not. I also do not know $$ difference between states to register a 2003. First time Cobras are titled as a 1966 or ? here with taxation based on a 66 so not to expensive for tags.
I have heard of cops driving through company parking lots ticketing autos from out of state in employee parking. But have never meet anybody firsthand or that knew this for a fact to have happened. I think if car is kept in this state and you are employeed in state it must be reg. or could get ticketed. I do know students and a couple other exceptions exist. Again please understand trying to help but am in no way educated on finer points of regulations = this is just what I have heard so take with a grain of salt.
Important fact is welcome to AZ. , hope to meet ya soon.

Welcome to AZ M. Singhof? or M. S. Inghof? Join us in our fun. We just had a dragstrip day last Sunday. Next Sat is track day at Firebird west. Close to you. Come on out and visit. Entry is cheap for spectators I think. e-mail Mikiec to get on AZCOBRA mail list. We have some 65+ members statewide. I registered my SPF in 2000 here and had no trouble. Kept my mouth shut when they asked questions. Just told them as little as possible. Mine was registered in Ohio (from Dynamic in Ross). Now pay $35.00 every 2 years for registration and $50.00 every 2 years for vanity plates.

Bob

Just reg. yesterday. It is a new SPF 1943. Went through a level II inspection. They looked the car up in a book until they found a matching picture... by the way.. they loved the car which makes things a little smoother.

It is a 1966 Shelby - Special Construction. Tags were about 50 bucks. Send me a private email if you want the details of the experience. No problema..fast ( for the state) -friendly service.

I brought mine here from out of state and registered earlier this year. You will be able to title and register as '65 Cobra - I did mine as a '66.

Since it is already titled, you only need Level 1 inspection. Level 2 is for new rollers. I used the station at Greenfield, just South of the US60 (Superstition). All they look for is that the VIN matches the title you have.

When I went, I parked in the Level 1 inspection line (about 3 cars long) and walked over to the Level 2 inspectors and asked them if I needed to move to the Level 2 line. The guy was helpful and went inside and told the gal what to put on the paperwork. In AZ they basically ignore your previous title information and create a new title which designates the car as the year it represents. The only problem I had was after the inspection, the other gal insidecould find an original sales price for a Cobra (used for license price figuring), so I told her $7000 (I guessed). We both figured $7000 was a lot for a car in '66 and the total license cost was about $40 for 2 years as I recall.

There are older threads here on this. A search should turn up other advice. I can tell you, the process is easy, seems to work repeatably, and is cheap.

Copied from one of my old posts:

Finally trailered down to the MVD at Greenfield and Southern to register my Midstates I got out of Texas which had a Nebraska title. The previous title listed it as a 1992 Assembled Vehicle, so I was worried about smog police trouble...

The folks at the MVD were so nice and quick. I only needed level 1 inspection. They titled it as "1966 Cobra Roadster" - no emissions - under the Specially Constructed Vehicle rules in AZ.

I paid my $35.34 for two years of registration and tags and left with license plate in hand.

Arizona is great...

You've gotten some good advise here. I will not add to it as I did mine 4 years ago.

If and when you are ready to join the gang send me an email and I'll add you to the list.

The club is very informal. No dues, no officers just the head wacko.

Mike

Mine's was registered as a '65 ford. when the DMV lady looked up the car's value she considered it a Shelby Cobra, so my registration shows a value of $237,000...I thought it might effect my reg fee, but it's still as a '65 and only $35 bucks. SHe asked if it was worth that. I told her "if you offered me that much for it I would take it" So did I lie? NO, and now I have a conversation piece of paper...

All I can say is these posts simply shows the states inconsistency in registering our cars. Although I must admit that at leasdt it's not a real hassle and it's reasonably priced.

I just regsitered my new Backdraft and it was no problem at all. Mine was new and I had the original Certificate of Origin for titling mine. Which was also cheap.

Just over a year ago here in Tucson, Mike Caruso registered his Michigan built and titled Cobra as a 1965 Ford roadster in Arizona. The plates are about $25.00 a year. Mike can be reached at 520-722-6673. You have lots of Cobra company in the Chander area. Mikiec can line you up with everyone in the Phoenix area - just ask him. Hope to see you at the party in December. John

Thanks everyone for the great replys! I am looking forward to getting to know many of you. Unfortunately, with the move here, time out in the Cobra will be somewhat limited until we get settled in. ALTHOUGH...I have to take advantage of this great weather you have here right now. Maybe we'll see some of you at the Pavallions tonight! Pics coming soon!
