Default Cobra's are GREAT!

The cold fact is that cobara's are fast, big blocks are faster and we look the best driving them. Are they the fastest car out there, no, is there going to be somebody faster, yes. EVERYBODY that has taken a ride in my car say it ROCKS for all kinds of reasons when they get out. My good friend took me for a spin in his race preped Vette and when I got out I missed the sound of the engine, wind, and feeling that you can only get from a Cobra, but man was his car fast! (and quite). I am sure that a jap car can be an equal competitor if you throw enough money at it or go to the right road course. Do I get passed by ricers at the track, yes (and it pisses me off) but I know that the next track I will be running over them in the straight and turns! that is the name of the game in road racing. Reality is that they are still in a jap car and I am in a legend! So here is to cars (don't we love them all?)

My Cobra will NEVER be the fastest, I'll NEVER be a great driver but it's just not that important! There is nothing sweeter to me than being in a Cobra and listening to the sound of an FE 427! No offense meant to SB cars but I just absolutely, unequivocally LOVE the sound of BB Fords! There is some unique and wonderful music when you go up and down through the gears with big Ford V8's.

I'm quite happy with my FIA however the most bang for the buck is probably a used 1993 RX-7. When these cars came out they used the NSX as the mark they want'ed to aim at for half the cost. In Tuner form they can get 800 HP and handle extremely well - all for under $25K. Now would I buy one - nah - can't fit in them.

Well this did stir up a few responses. I did not see the car Dad was talking about or the kids Accura. All in all I must just be getting old not to have responded because mine is very heavily modified. The "mine is bigger than yours" line usually gets me every time.
My toy is a Cobray-C3 built on a complete Corvette C3 chassis at 98 inches not a 90-inch wheelbase and a 60-inch width or 5 wider than a Shelby. The engineers at Vette Brake Products brought the complete suspension package into the 21st century. VBP specifically designed this package for our car using race proven components and today’s computer technologies. This 2400 pound rocket rides on custom valved shocks, front and rear fiberglass monospring conversions with matched sway bars The front coil springs and control arms have been replaced with lightweight upper and lower tube parts with modified geometry, all tied together with the fiberglass monospring conversions. Monosprings allow incremental +/- rate changes of up to 480 pounds. Moving a pivot pin/block allows easy and fast track adjustments. The IRS rear has lightweight offset tubular control arms allowing the 17-inch rims with a 12-inch footprint to be centered over the spindle using alloy parts to reduce the sprung weight. Adjustable four corner weight jacking with computer specified baseline settings and sway bars allow final tweaking so the power can be put to the road. Braking is controlled via assist from a Buick PowerMaster unit with ceramic pads on the 4 wheel 4 piston calipers modified by VBP on the 12-inch gas slotted rotors. Power is supplied from a Sportsman engine built by Scott Shafiroff Racing. http://www.shafiroff.com/sportsman_engines.asp The Dart 540 inch Gen 6 has a dyno sheet showing 876 HP at the flywheel. This setup was on alky and now running gas as the alky is just such a pain for street driving and so corrosive. It is not your average toy and may be a handful for the Honda in this case.

I to like the Jesus story. Trying to compare a Cobra to much more modern, well prepared track cars is kind of like comparing apples and hand grenades.
The apples, like the NSX, 360, Porsche or like cars have much more modern suspensions, are much easier to drive, and take a totally different technique. Properly set up with the right driver they are very quick. It also depends on the track design as to how quick compared to other cars.
The grenades, Cobras, are pure beast. With the 90" wheel base, generally older suspensions designs, and lack of modern design, (there are always exceptions), they are very hard to drive quickly. Those like Ken Miles, Dick Smith, Bondo, And Don Roberts have had the intestinal fortitude to do things with these cars that most would never concider trying. There are times and tracks where a modern car will beat a well prepared Cobra, but there are also times the a Cobra will hand a modern car it's lunch.
Whick is better, I don't know. The finese of the modern cars are fun but I really like having 500-600hp and matching torque in a car that you have to drive sideways through the turns to go really quickly. It's all for the fun anyway. The important part is to have fun and keep it off the walls.
