Default Dyno Day?

Have the AZ Cobras ever gotten together for a Dyno day? I saw that AMP Performance has a dyno service. I really don't know much about them or the service. Anybody have any experiences?

Would there be any interest in getting together for some testing? I'm not sure what they charge or if they'd be interested in cutting us a 'bulk rate' if we get several cars to go down. I'm curious to find out what my stocker is putting out since it doesn't seem like it's got all the ponies that it should. Maybe they can help me find any I've lost.

What do you think?

I'm in if we can get together. Hopefully get a bulk rate. I feel the same way as you do.

I'm thinking back through the haze and I believe that Brian and maybe Jim B. took their cars to a dyno in Tempe a couple years ago. I'd be up for it, if for no other reason than to see how my A/F ratio is. I'm sure the results would be rather humbleing, since we all think we've got gobs of power.

We did a Dyno day about 5 years ago. Had 8 cars show up. The cost at that time was $50.00 for 3 pulls. No tuning was performed.

Bob Broberg did it a couple of years ago at a different place. Jerry mentioned some place in the east valley.

Get it organized and I'll get an email out.

If anybody knows some names of dyno places, I can make some calls and see what's what. The only reason I know about AMP is because I was doing an internet search for speed shops and they came up. I don't know if they're good or bad. I'll also do some searches and see what I can find.

Mike - do you remember where you went last time?

No, I do not remember. I may still have the shops card at home. It was a shop that Gordon use to use.

Guys,

I have used Pro-Dyno in Tempe as well as Chucks's Speed Center in North Downtown. Either had what I needed.

The dyno days are usually for bragging rights, which is fine. Often there is little time or more importantly, expert guidance and support in changing your setup between runs, since the dyno operator is running the dyno on another car and not tuning yours...

If you are an experienced tuner and just want the AF numbers like Karlos said, a group venue can work, and you can tune your own ride in between pulls, if they will take you off the rack in between pulls (sometimes, they just want to make three pulls without unchaining your car and so you never get to make a change and see the results, but at least you know which way to go for your first change). Just make sure you have the appropriate sets of jets, power valves, squirters, and pumps, as well as your timing light and the tools handy. Several folks fit into this category.

If you're looking for expert tuning service, I'd schedule a solo appointment so you have the full attention of the tuner. This will cost real money, but can yield real results.

BTW, my BBC ate the cam earlier this year and I won't have the new 540 until winter. This has left me without much engine fun, so I'd be happy to come out and help... I'll stay tuned (no pun intended).

And... Karlos, you do have gobs of power. Ya just don't run 10s without it!

Yes, Mike is right, we did have a dyno day as a club back in 2001. Noone was pleased with the numbers. Down in Chandler I think. Later that year I went to Pro-Dyno and got about 70 more horses but that was simply a different dyno. No tuning. To tune you must leave your car there all day and spend big $$$.

John Panfil at Anthem motors has suggested a club dyno day. Maybe that's a good place to start. I should be there this week (I hope) and will ask about the price and timing.

I have some customers in chandler with a new four wheel Dyno not that you need a four wheel. I will ask them what they would be willing to do.

Just had a chat with John Panfil at Anthem Motorsports. By the way, they replaced my broken water pump with a new, aluminum Edelbrock one. We talked about a Dyno-Day and he is receptive. Perhaps late Oct or early Nov. Warm-up pull, Dynojet type pull and a Mustang Dyno pull. He is working out a special price. I told him my guess would be 10 or 12 cars. Don't have to be cobras. We can make a day of it on a Sat or Sun. Refreshments, food etc. Does this sound interesting?
By the way, BOY does he have a lot of cool cars!

Thanks for talking to him, Bob. I'm interested in this. Do they have a dyno there at Anthem or is it somewhere else? I've only been there once and I don't remember seeing one.

Mike, Anthem has a 4-wheel Dyno but of course you don't need a 4-wheel drive car. This dyno is state of the art and can be set for Dyno-Jet numbers (higher numbers because of less drag on tires) or Mustang Dyno numbers (just like on the street). Of course the higher numbers is what everyone wants but the Mustang Dyno is a better "tuning" method. They can even do a simulated quarter mile run with results the same as at Speedworld.

Where is Anthem?

It might be nice to go somewhere more central to folks in the SE valley, assuming Anthem is where I think it is.

Anthem Motors is at I-17 and Deer Valley. Probably not where you thought it was but still a good drive from Queen Creek.

I thought it was in South Flagstaff and you have confirmed it.

I'll not whine strongly this time, since my ride is dead... OR, maybe I'll bring my low 12 sec '73 Vette. It should have lots of power, since it is nearly 4000 lb with me and gas. Maybe it'll produce some good numbers. Hmmmmmm?

Now, don't youse guys relish the idea of picking on the lowly Vette?

I'd go if you guys get it together.

Anthem is North of Deer Valley on the frontage road West of the I17. Did they get an air fuel meter? I called there a while back and they said they don't have one. Maybe they do though. Not sure. It's a cool place with cars to look at. Would make for nice Cobra pics on the Dyno.

http://map.web.mapquest.com/?e=9&Get...%26%40&rnd=429

I've been to Dyno-comp. www.dyno-comp.com, a number of times with assorted cars. They're into performance and are quite detailed. I was there one day however and they had just had a Cobra unload a rod on the dyno. It's Dynodynamics type load bearing dyno.

Dynojets are inertia to see who can accelerate the drum the fastest. I'd sort of like a Dynojet number for my car to relate to the rest of the planet that quotes Dynojet numbers. AMP has a Dynojet. They have some cool engine stuff over there.

I have done the dyno thing twice now at Dyno Comp in Scottsdale. Seem to have their act together.....Maybe Gordon would want to participate?
See picture of their set up in my gallery.
