Lost my best little buddy today
I had to have my best friend put to sleep today. God, I miss the little guy. He had a liver problem since he was a puppy. The vet said he would live to be five, maybe. He made it to almost eleven with a lot of love and work on our part.

sorry for you!! I posted a similar story last October. Losing a dog is worse than... well I'll let everybody think of that one. We miss our dear old dog, Sammie, still to this day.
We kept a pic of her (before she got down) on the fridge. Helped a lot. Now it's in a frame, in the living room, with the family pics. We loved that dog!!

So sorry to hear of your loss.
We just put down our 11 year old Rottie about a month ago after a battle with bone cancer. She was diagnosed on Valentine's Day this year, we amputated her right front leg and she was great for 7 months until another tumor showed up on her spine and she lost control of her bladder and bowels and couldn't walk anymore.
Her name was Heidi and she was a Therapy Dog certified through St Hubert's and the Delta Society. We miss her every day, best dog we ever had.

Sorry for you John. I had to put my 13 year old Border Collie "Brandy" down about 2 years ago, still miss her. Great dog,Great friend and companion. I was absolutely astounded at how deeply it impacted me. I have lost many friends/family over the years and it was the hardest passing I have had to deal with.

sorry for your loss. my wife and i have had to put down three dogs in our married time. all the while we were raising 5 kids. we too have lost family and friends and it is so true that the loss of our " special friends" is way harder than our rational minds are willing to accept. there are all kinds of reasons for this and i'm sure we all could expound on them but there is no doubt that the loss of our pets creates a huge hole in our existence. i couldn't bare the thought of getting another puppy but after a few years i finally gave in and we got a baby bull dog. he's our first bull dog after newfoundland (gabe),great pyrenees (bacchus) and pug (spud), his name is Bubba and he is filling the void and helping us get on with our lives. good luck to you and yours and God bless.

my folks just put down thier 4 legged child after 13 years (many of those years were occupied by constant health issues for megs), i've never seen my father cry before. it is very very hard on both of my parents. after a couple of weeks they went out and found a brother and sister (dogs) in need of adoption and it has been a renewed love for my parents. remember the good memories that you had and look forward to the new memories to be ahead. i wish you the best in this difficult time ............

Me and my wife's hearts go out to you. We lost our "Emma" a few years ago (half Lab, half Airdale - aka a Lab with a beard) diagnosed w/bone cancer at 13 months, she was our baby. Although she did beat the odds given her; after an amputation and chemo she had one heck of a good life for an additional 1-1/2 years. We miss her every day. It's tough, but time helps heal the hurt you feel now.

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement. He was the best and played an important role in my life. This is probably not the forum for this but again, thank you.

DU,
I feel for you and your family. It's tough.
I've had to put down three dogs, and it's never easy saying goodbye to them. They truly are mans best friends accepting us with all our faults without question.
Just remember how glad he always was to see you everytime you came home, and how he brought a smile to your face no matter how bad your day had been.
Get another as soon as you can, it won't erase the pain, but it will ease it some, and you will have another new friend.
Dave

We had to finally put down Farfignugan the coolest dog in the world, he was 19 people years, he just couldnt get around anymore. My son was in diapers when we got him, Ive never seen a better dog with kids. Man, its like one of the family. He is in the closet (ASHES!!) we're going to bury him with the guy who saved his scrawny butt on a work site. I'm a cat person, but this dog is on the wall in pictures with the rest of the family. He was LOVED. The one with the gray chin!!!

When we lost our old Lab, we wasted no time getting a puppy to fill the empties. He's a good sport too.

Although not a dog, my wife and I had to put down our beloved horse Sis this spring due to her having a stroke. Sis had lived to be 41 years old (yes, 41 people years) and my wife had owned her for 39 years since she was in high school. Even though Sis couldn't do much more than eat and poop her last few years she gave us much joy. I spent a lot of time standing in the barn telling her my problems, and she always listened and seemed concerned.

I am sorry about your loss. I lost my best buddy this March, the first day of spring! She was a Collie-Shepherd mix that I got from the SPCA 15 years ago. She went everywhere with me. I have tears in my eyes as I write this note. It brings up wonderful memories of Lady. I had her put to sleep because she got so weak she would walk around the yard, lay down and not want to get up. She had to be spoon fed and I found out she had heart failure. She was suffering so much and I realized it would be more humane to put her to sleep. I thought about not getting another dog but I started going to the SPCA every week looking for a Collie mix. I fell in love with a 2 year old black Lab and he is a great dog and is now my best buddy. Get a shelter dog, you will likely save their life and I know saving their life means a lot to me. Losing a pet is so very difficult but getting another helped me a lot.

DoubleU....Sorry for your loss. My wife and I have had 4 cats in the last 19 years that have lived long lives of 13-17 years. As indoor cats, they were always very affectionate, loving and attentive. However, each one, in the end got so ill, that after very long struggles to keep them going the only humane thing was to put them down. We likely waited too long in 2 cases because of our inability to make the decision.
Sad, but for some reason animals never seem to pass on naturally. My wife and I have had to go through this agonizing decision 4 times in the past 3 years so we know the pain...Our hearts go out to you. After each time we always say no more pets but, with time, we always go on to get another.
Just remember the great times with your dog and take comfort in the fact you stood by him and gave him the best home anyone could ever provide.
He knows it.
We have found that each pet can never truly be replaced in your heart as they all are unique. But, in a while, go out and get another pet and do the same again.
Each earns their spot in your family history and they give us as much love in their time as we give them in ours. They say, for families of animal lovers, pets are just children with fir coats. With 4 children and 6 grandchildren and (another on the way) we know all about families and pets.
We have adopted 2 kittens since we lost the 4 other cats and these 2 characters are also unique personalities.
Trust me.....It's well worth it...Best wishes...ox_ford_guy

Sorry to hear, old dogs and children, makes a life for an old man. Get up a pup--any little pup will do. My dog, Professor Vernon Von Studebaker , in-service to the government, has suffered a broken pelvis, long ago, on the farm we just call him Big-Head, every day when i arrive from work, blow the car horn coming down the driveway, now I don,t have to, cause he is already watching for me, old Big-Head offering me a paw, and we talk. And yeah, folks we are all in this together, appreciate all of you. Will-alabama
