Default Soft cobra market.

I talked to Scott Coyle yesterday. He has a Hi Tech for sale as do I. This isn't a good time to sell but do you think the auction mania that will begin in a few weeks will liven up the local market here? Someone told me that the Pavilions on Saturday will be a zoo around mid month and to get there real early. Does anybody have some ideas when "real early" is? Thanks, John

Early is around 10am. Leave the for sale sign on the seats or you may be asked to leave.

Beware, WestWorld is not public property. Craig Jackson is serious about getting his cut. He has, in the past, pursued people after hearing that a 'Reserve' car was sold off premises. Part of the disclaimer when selling a car through BJ is that he gets part of the take, period. If you try and sell a car on premises, be prepared to be chased off. IMO, 10am isn't that early. I arrive at 8:30 most days of the auction.

John,

I do not really think the market is soft, just that there is far more competition out there for the higher end cars. If you as the seller wants to sell, then you have to be far more aggressive with your price structure vs the competition, and your advertising in order to lure the higher ticket buyers to your car. If someone told me at the beginning of August that I would be selling my ERA for what it sold for, I would have told them they were nuts....But now I know better and view it as just another in a long line of learning curves about the market and what it has become.

Follow the advice above, but instead of placing a large for sale sign someplace in the passenger compartment, stop at your local instant sign store and have them mock up a simple "for sale" lettering in white, maybe 1-1,5 inches high. Then place a bunch of your business cards with your cell phone listed on it on a seat or on your center console for people to be able to contact you. I had my ERA to plenty of places that did not allow for sale signs, and nobody ever said a word.

On BJ weekend,Pavillions will start filling in between 1400 & 1500.

And the market IS soft.Too many Cobras and the few buyers ,most haven't a clue as to why there is such a price spread between the higher end cars and the lower. So their logic is-Why should i pay 50K when a can get one for 25K?Then they pay the 25K and find out.

The times I've been there 14:30 seems to be the time when it starts to trickle in. During the January auctions time frame I think real early is the way to go based on the two inputs.

John think about an ad in the paper during 'B-J Week'. I know a couple guys that have done well in the past doing that.

The ad goes in the Republic on the 9th. A friend lives on a busy street in Phoenix and has sold a few of his cars in January. He's offered to put it in his driveway.

For those of you who aren't that familiar with all of this, the Pavillions is not part of Barrett-Jackson. (The Pavillions is the cruise-in spot at the 101 and Indian Bend.) If you never register your car for auction at B-J, there is nothing to keep you from trying to sell it at the Pavillions.

Just wanted to provide a little clarification for the readers...

I've been very closely watching the Cobra market now for almost 3 years. As I get more and more involved, my wants go to higher and higher level cars. I started wanting a FFR, then decided I wanted to step up to a SPF, then said I wanted an ERA, now I'm starting to think about waiting for a Kirkham. My point is, as my price range goes up and up, my wait becomes longer as I try to accumulate the funds. In the meantime, I watch the market. I can tell you without a doubt that 3 years ago, a top shelf ERA with a 427 FE sideoiler in it, all top of the line equipment and workmanship, would have been 60K to 65K. There's no way you'd get that now. I recently saw an incredible ERA, in my view the nicest one I had yet seen, go for 50 - 52K. Even more surprising was that it lasted on the market at that price for over 6 months. I'm not saying that this is good or bad - it just is what it is. The prices on used Cobras has come way down, especially on the upper end cars like ERA. In that time, prices on SPF's have fallen dramatically as well. As far as Kirkham's I haven't followed them as long, so I'll leave that to someone else. However, there was recently a nice looking Kirkham with a 429 or 460 in it (I forget which) that was available at the lowest price I have yet seen for a Kirkham.

That car went off the market when the #7 rod decided to ventilate the engine block and pan.

That's the one! A very nice Kirkham at an unheard of price. Green, if I remember correctly. Still, if I remember correctly, it sat for a while before misfortune struck. Talk about priced right - that car was a steal. Yet another indication of the falling pices of Cobra's. Hope all is well with you and your beautiful car. Best of luck.

Actually it was a naked Kirkham not the green one. That GRG with Tan leather Kirkham was listed at $115K I believe. Mine was listed at $78

Yep, my mistake. 78K for a Kirkham is crazy cheap. I was surprised it lasted a day on the market.
