I lived in northern Arizona (Williams & Parks) growing up in the 60's. I loved Arizona back then. Two years ago we looked around Prescott, couldn't afford to buy. WE bought a place in Oregon instead. Oregon summers & Bakersfield winters..............Ron

Ron, I have many relatives in Bakersfield that have been trying to get me to move there. No offense but I've always thought that if the state of Ca. ever needed an enema, that's where the hose would be inserted. Crime, smog, fog and illegal's, it has them all.

Everything looks better somewhere else. Stay where you are and rent here for a summer, then decide. You may want to get back to cool weather and no traffic jams, drive bys, break ins and we have a better basketball team.

Gary: You might check out central WA. you get 4 seasons hot summers,
snow in the winter. Alot like Co. Check out Wenatchee, Cashmere, and Chelan if you are loaded.

If I wanted 4 seasons plus the snow and cold every year in the winter I'd move back to Co.
I want warmth(and mostly dry) year around.

All the Az guys should know better than to say to outsiders that this is a great place to live. That is why this place has grown to the size that it is now. Just kidding at this point it almost doesn't matter. Prescott and Payson both have 4 seasons and never really get that hot or cold if you want to be at about 5000 ft up. Cottonwood is lower elevation. A lot depends on what you want to do in your retirement (e.g. fishing, exploring the desert, nightlife...).

Weather in AZ
The formula is 5.6 deg cooler for every 1000' of elevation. We are in Chino Valley (4500 ft) and have a cabin near Williams (7000 ft) . It is 10-15 deg cooler at the cabin. That is why we move up there for the summer.

From someone who moved from my adopted state of AZ in Tucson, the 15 years I lived in the Catalina foothills were the greatest. The day I moved was the worst.  (Living at the base of the Blue Ridge in NC isn't too bad, though.) Driving down Campbell Ave. from above Sunrise in the morning and back up in the evening every workday was a blast, particularly when driving my road-race prepped Mustang. Never had to worry about frost on the Windshield let alone snow. And nearly every morning and evening was a coloe show put on by the rising and setting sun.  The best place in the world to live, but with one problem . . . too many are taking advantage of the dry heat and moving in.

I think the temperature lapse rate is 2 degrees per thousand.
We live about a thousand feet higher than the valley. Between the heat sink effect, the slighly higher elevation and the swamp cooler effect from the golf course we are generally 5-6 degrees cooler than the temp. reported at the airport.

John: Maybe it gets colder faster as you go up in Californeea. Uh, I believe the lapse rate is closer to 3F with !,000-ft changes in elevation, but maybe it's less in Scottsdale.

Here is the real formulas from the weather service:
Dry air - 5.5 deg per 1000'
Wet air - 2.7 deg per 1000'
Example Flagstaff (7000 ft) is typically 30 - 35 deg cooler than Phoenix (1000 ft)

John: Wet air isn't too bad. It's the fast moving air I trained in, or 15 knots with 25 knot gusts from 170 on a 6-24 runway.

I live in Scottsdale. There have been a few houses in my neighborhood for sale for months. If you buy one we could have two Cobras in the hood.
Summer is hot, but drive time is always there in the evenings. Winter is perfect in the day.

I agree...
I Live in San Diego but have owned a house in Lake Havasu City for the past 7 years. Great town with lots of toys from million dollar boats to hot rods, muscle cars and Cobras. Big vacation town with events going on almost every weekend. I try and get out there at least twice a month.
Bill, We are about a mile up from Windsor Launch Ramp BTW. I plan on trailering the Cobra out there this spring maybe we will see you...

I moved from SFO to Mesa last May. We live on the northeast side and love it. It is hot but, what surprises me, it's cold too. Right now you can find deals on homes in every area. You can probably find a better deal on a pre-existing "inventory" home belonging to one of the builders (new home unsold). In my neighbor the builder is offer $100,000 discounts on existing homes and $50,000 on new homes. Probably similar offers in many areas. Don't think you can get the same type deal on vacant lots.
