Tranny/rear end change
After 2300 miles in 10 days I am thinking about changing transmissions or rear end gears for a little less rpm on highways, what are you guys running?

3:73's ...........but to low for my needs.
I am looking to go to 3:50's and 2" taller tires will make up the difference. You can change the tire heigth and make up the difference in the trans, if you want too. It's quick on the hole shot but the low rear has me red lining before the traps. If you got a 3:50 ring and pinion for a 9" rear I'll swap ya.

Go with the 3:27 , it's the one used in cars with an automatic transmission. It sounds like you are going to be a driver of your Cobra and that gearing will be perfect. It is an all around gear that you can drive long distances with better gas mileage and less engine noise. The 3:55's are ok also but add a few RPM's. John

I have 350 in the rear and the tremic road race trans with the .80 fifth. Geared for 180mph at red line (160mph was scarry enough). With the big block and the big torque it works just fine. However on long cruises it would be nice to have a lower gear for the freeway and oh ya, GAS MILEAGE!
If you drive go to the 3:27 it will work fine with the light weight of the car.

I have 3:27's in my car. T-5 with a .68 5th. RPM low at cruise. 5th only after 70mph.

Steve, 3:73 17 inch tires..get 19 miles to the gallon on the highway..I'm not changing anything...Thanks for the company out to the FFR show..It was awesome..I can't wait till next year..Dave

Another vote for 3.27 rear gears.
Keeps the revs down in 5th when cruising long distances.
26.5" diameter tires help, too.
If you have a T-5 or Tremec, the usual 5th OD ratio is 0.68. Some are 0.82, but rarely.

My rear end is 3.73 and the 5th gear is .68 on a Tremec, tires 26 in. At 65 t0 70 MPH the engine loafs at 1900 to 2000 RPM and at that RPM the ignition sytem is sill on multiple sparks. Low noise level and good gas milage.

3.27 gears
I have a 28'' tall 275/60, TKO600 w/.82 5th gear and 3.27's....this combo is so much better then my original 3.73 gears.
Myself and COBISH have different combinations but similar results in 5th gear, the big difference is I don't have a 1200 drop in RPM's as I shift from 4th to 5th with the .82's, mine is closer to 400 RPM's

I have 3.27 and works great, especially on the long drives 700-800 miles.
