Default Looking for a 302 and 5 speed

I was in Reno last weekend at Hot August Nights and picked up a Unique for my son. Unfortunatly the car has a fairly weak automatic and a 289. I would like to put a little more power on the road but don't want him to get too crazy. I am looking for a 302 or ? and a 5 speed

Personally... I'd let him get the hang of the car with the 289. it's more than enough power for a beginner... My .02

I would absolutely agree unless more information is provided like how old is your son etc?
Not an answer, I know, to the question but......

Converting an auto to manual is quite involved.

John, how about adding paddle shifters with the automatic until comfortable?

Talk to Hershal, he has a deal with Ford crate motors. Get the GT40 crate motor , it is about 350hp which is enough to get started... The trans you can buy at a junkyard from a newish wreck. Just get someone to look inside. In fact the 4.6 and 5 speed is pretty fast too, there was one in Orange County when Jeff C and I went over there in May. Measure the car though, it is pretty big...

These cars are fine with 350hp, after that it can get a little more challenging. They handle a lot better and stop quicker than my first car, a 66 389 GTO... I will be happy to tutor him in the technique if you want...

Steve

Ironman, Let him get a couple of thousand miles on it the way it is. OR, get him some track time. Even autocross time will build confidence while teaching him to respect the Cobra and learn it's habits. John
