It's easy to twist and turn wording to suit a purpose but everyone that asks wants to know whether it's a original AC cobra from the 1960s

I can say I have a 65 backdraft because that is the name that it was given.

Someone should come out with a kit/Roller and call it a original AC cobra that's probably not even copyrighted at this point as a whole. then if someone asked You could say oh yes it's a Original AC cobra.

Let's face it whichever one you choose is made Currently As a kit or by Some guys in the building at some different part of the earth and some other guys Give it a Engine And trains.

My cousin Mona has an original Mona Lisa Painting she can sell you for a thousand bucks but don't ask me if it's genuine :-)

And as for the main question of this Tread, I've gotten to the point where I've narrowed it down if someone asked me I just say no its a backdraft Cobra from South Africa and they usually just say wow that's beautiful I thank them and drive on.

It's so funny how we Often get offended including myself when someone questions our authenticity That we don't have

At least the ones that ask know what kind of car it is! I have no problem telling them it is a "replica" but I do try to shy away from telling them it is a "kit" car. To a lot of people "including myself" the term "kit car" brings to mind the rebodied VW bugs of the 70's. These are no kit car by that definition!
If you mean that you take parts from various vendors and build your own, then the originals were "kit cars". Carrol didn't make the bodies, just modified them. He didn't produce the engines, just modified them.
These are modern reproduced replicas, even if they come in some form of "kit" packaging. I am always proud to tell them that I built it myself, every nut and bolt of it. It may not be worth what many are but I am having a blast driving mine and showing it off to all that snap their necks around as I pass them by! None of us should be offended by someone asking about our cars. I don't get that attention from any of my other classic cars I own or have owned in the past. My neighbor just dropped 60K for a new LS1 Camero, and he has been bugging me to "trade" cars for a drive to compare. I know his is fast and fun to drive, but it is not a Cobra and he knows it. Mine has manual steering, brakes, no A/C traction control top or side windows, but I would rather drive mine than his anyday!
So, go ahead and ask, I'ts a replica of the most beautiful car every made in my opinion, and I built it myself!

Since mine is not a "kit" car, I just mention that it's a factory car and let them draw their own conclusions. If the ask if it's a Shelby, I say "Of course it is.".. and smile.

Of course it's original. I nomally drive a $750k car on the streets of Wilmington, DE. Here's a crisp new $100 bill for guessing correctly.

Is it a kit car. Yer, it came in a big box, and I glued it all together. Now don't touch it, the wheels don't turn.

We all know what "is it real" is being asked.

The person asking can have a sneer in his voice or snap back with some cute reply or
I thought it was a fake but I take them down quickly. The innocent but not to sure still
just want to confirm what they are seeing.

To feed my ego for the night, the fake comment gets a short forced laugh and then I ask him if the bus was crowded.

I got the question twice yesterday.

Both times it was clear that the people just wanted to know whether they were looking at an original Cobra or not. In neither case were they looking down on the car.

So, in both cases, I informed them that there are no original Cobras in Ottawa, and then described all the great features of my Superformance replica. They took some photos and thanked me for all the info. They also told me about some of the cars in they garage and/or past, so it was a nice exchange.

About three years ago I was at a big car show and saw a nice older B&B. I had just ordered one and knew the dash layout pretty well. I was kind of excited to see a B&B in Utah as it was the first I had seen in person. Just to confrim I asked the owner what brand it was. He said it was a Shelby Cobra. I told him it sure looked like a B&B as I had just ordered one. He then proceeded to tell me how it was a B&B body on an original Shelby frame and how Shelby had bought bodies from B&B for awhile. I could see the car had Mustang A arms.
This last summer I saw the same car at a small city car show. I talked to the guy that owned it who was a new owner, not the guy I talked to before. When I approached the car I said, oh you have a B&B. He responded the with same story the previous owner told me and seemed offended at my comment. I didn't tell him I had just finished building one.

Either he got took on the car or really doesn't know Cobras. Some guys really carry this pretend thing way to far.

If it's a early Shelby, then only AC Bristol bodies are. They provided running chassis with bodies to Carroll Shelby to finish in his plant in LA. AC existed until 1984, surviving longer than Shelby.

With that in mind, it can be said in point of fact that ALL Shelbys are kits, Mustangs included, just like Saleens or Yenkos. They weren't the first, and certainly not the last kit car. Of course, AC copied a 1950's Barchetta Ferrari. It's really ironic to claim "Mines REAL!" when it's an homage. It's a lame attempt at elitism to claim a position of social prestige.

Maybe the better answer to "Is it real?" might be, "Shelby bought unfinished kits from an English supplier, what does real mean?"

Frame the discussion on your terms.

True story. Parked the cobra and went in to dinner. Forgot my reading glasses and went back to the car to get them. A gentleman was explaing to his two kids about the car. He aksed me "What year Corvette is that?". I told him it is a 1953 and walked away. I heard him explaining to his kids how I was lucky to have such an old Corvette.
