I've probably been asked a couple of hundred times during the past 5 years and I accept it for what it is. I've never seen anyone look disappointed after I confirm it's a "kitcar". I went on a long cruise a few months ago with 20 other replicas and one 64 289 car. It has never been restored so as you would expect from any "driven" 40+ year old car, it was the least "polished" of the lot. It's funny watching spectators drool over the SPFs, FFRs and Uniques and scoff at the little dingy white Cobra. After all, if it weren't for the "is it real? mistique, this sport wouldn't be anything like it is!

When people ask is it real, I answer yes. If a person asks if it is an original, I will say no.

Once in awhile I'll get a real knowledgeable car guy like Mulvi ask if it is a MG or old Vette. Usually when those folks see the dash plaque most walk away.

When a person asks, "Is it a real one"?

I just say, "It sure is, and when I nail the thing from a standing start...it gets more real".

Best Regards, Havasubill

Just take all them for a ride and scare the hell out of them. When finished ask them if they think it is real or fake....Remember to scare the living crap out of them and laugh as you drive; maybe start singing "Amazing Grace" as you start up the car so they get that first impression of a real crazy SOB! I like Muls answer, who cares! You are driving it and they are not.

OH, PS....don't tell them about the side pipe. It will give them something to remember you by!

Is it a real Cobra?
If you can't tell does it make a difference?
(that one always gets them to leave)

Is it a real Cobra?
If it was real it would be worth $700,00.00 and do you think I would let it out of my Garage....

Thats all I got besides a big grin....

Now it's time for me to get a beer and watch the show...

Default "Is that the new BMW?"

I had a guy in an Escalade with giant spinning chrome wheels ask "Is that the new BMW?" Of course I told him yes and directed him to the local BMW dealer.

When asked if it's "real" or "original", I just politely respond, "Nah, but I'm flattered you had to ask."

Russ, I think you hit the perfect answer !!! Can I steal your answer?

Somehow I get hung up on the REAL part, not as in an original Shelby as I know they all mean but will it disappear if I try to touch it. I explain to them REAL is an original Shelby. I take the interest and questions as a complement that they would even bother to ask and always take a few moments to talk car with them.

Vettestr: REAL means original to you. REAL means Shelby to me and SAAC.

Real or not, I'd bet the farm that most of us have had at least one person walk up to the car, knock some knuckles on the fender and ask, "Is she a real one?!?"

Well know I know your definition, thanks. We do not agree on what the average person means when they ask if it is REAL. I am REAL sure we are not going to changes each others mind on this but we can each enjoy the love of the cars and the good folks it seems to draw to them ALL ?
Take care Jeff c

Ultimately, here is the proper answer:

Replica owners start here:

"It's a replica of a 427 Shelby Cobra,.."

Shelby owners (CSXxxxx) start here:

"...which is a modified version of the 289 Cobra, which was a modified AC ACE, which was a modified Tojiero design that was based upon a replica of a Ferrari 166 Barchetta."

When asked if it's a real one or a kit, I tell them no it's a replica. Kits you buy in the toy store and glue them together, this one was put together by me using real man tools.

I believe when most people ask is it REAL? They are really asking if it is an ORIGINAL!

Until I found this site a little less than a year ago. I thought of kits as those stuck on VW's to look like a Mangusta, or something exotic. Shoddy workmanship, and rattles on most I ever saw.

I am a much smarter person today, and this is also when I found out there is a continuation of CSX#'s. REAL does not make it original, but it can still be a Shelby. Now if you look at this as a kit, or a REAL Cobra it will never be an ORIGINAL, and ORIGINAL is what they really want to know.

Not certain on the pronunciation. I've been pronouncing it with the hard "J", but thinking about it, it's probably a soft "J" or "H" sound...

Anybody know?
