Cobra Weigh-In. Tucson, Feb. 9th
The Tucson Cobras invite you to the Third Cobra Weigh-In. Your Cobra will be weighed and balanced. The process takes about ten minutes per car. You'll receive a print-out of the information. If time permits and you want to do it, you can make balance adjustments and get the Cobra re-balanced. The date is Saturday, February 9th. Coffee and donuts will be provided in the morning and hot dogs for lunch. The location is the North End Auto Repair ( Cobra owner Bernie McKearney's business). It is at 4262 N. Flowing Wells. Those of you coming from out of the Tucson area please arrive anytime after 9:00 am. John

Hi guys, I see that there is no interest in coming down to Tucson for our "Weigh-In". I guess that there must be something really big happening up there. OR ??? Bernie has four wheel scales and all of the fancy electronics. This would be a great oppurtunity to find out how much your Cobra really weighs, as well as what the front to rear balance is. We'll close up everything about 1:00pm, or earlier if there is no interest. John PS. The weather will be in the 70's on Friday and mid 60's on Saturday.

John, if you have the time, can you take the measurements calculate the CG height and send me the data? It is easy to do. If you can GREAT, if not, thanks anyways

I am not sure that i can answer that, however, tomorrow I'll ask the owner of the shop if he can do that. Just to cnofirm, you want the Center of Gravity spot for a Factory Five Cobra. I assume that it would be in inches above the ground. John

My response may be to late John but I am looking for the CG height. What ever car you use I just need to know what kind, load (driver, fuel), etc. I have been guessing at about 17" but having some realy data would be great. No need to calc it, just the raw data. Thanks!

I'm planning on making the trip to Tucson Saturday. Yahoo is saying it should be in the low 70's and that will make for an enjoyable drive. I'll be leaving the QT gas station at UNIVERSITY AND BROWN at 9 to run down through Florence to sneak in the back door to Tucson. Mike B, Dave, anyone in East Bumscrew wanna hook up? Danr, I already saw that you're headed the other direction. I doubt that my backside could stand another trip Sunday, but it could happen. Hate to waste the gorgeous driving weather. (salt in the wound to those living in the frozen tundra)

Dave, you've undoubtedly seen the kid and grandkids before. Have you ever gottne your car four point weighed? Sounds like an easy choice to me.

Karl, looking forward to seeing you. Is your Cobra a 90 " wheelbase? We have extenders for longer wheelbases up to 102". Bernie's is not hard to find, you might try to mapquest it, If you have any questions let me know. Think about if you want the Cobra weighed with a full load of fuel, and consider emptying your trunk. John

John, yes, 90" wheelbase. Mikie, I've considered turning my engine around to slow down to "Ford Speed" but my RAT would still weigh more than a BBF. Oh well, the power and reliability help make up for it. AND, I've still got a chunk of change in my pocket that I would have had to spend to get the same performance out of a FoMoCo engine.

Rdorman, I spoke with the shop owner today and he said that he has never done that CG location process. He is aware of it and his equipment can do it. He said that it is a much longer process than just weighing the Cobra and he didn't think that he would have the time to do it on Saturday. If he changes anything on his racing Cobra he will do the CG mesurement and I'll get the info for you. John

Tucson John, Bernie, and Tucsonian Cobra Folks, Thanks for letting me and my buddy, Eric, join in on your weigh-in day. Enjoyed meeting you all, the food was tasty, and it was certainly a good day for a drive. Bernie, thanks for the the use of your scales and thanks for the lunch. See you all again sometime.

So what kind of total weights were seen? I hope everybody was fully gased up so it will be apples to apples.

The weights varied a lot. The lowest weights, 2,130,lbs., 2,213, & 2,214, were on Cobras that were recently completed and licensed. However, they do not have carpet, windwings, sunvisors, windshield wipers, etc., or paint. And they didn't have the collection of tools that we somehow accumalate and ten pounds of dirt and dust inside and under the cars. These were stripped down but drivable cars. One Cobra came in at 2,169. It was autocrossed for a couple of years and the suspension and weights were closely watched, it is a beautifully finished Cobra with a 302 and five speed. Another raceing Cobra was 2,309. The added weight is due to road racing suspensions, instruments, seats, racing tires and wheels. This car has been heavly modified. Two Cobras that enjoy the show circuit came in at 2,334, & 2,371 lbs. The weight that seemed to be the average for a normal driving street Cobra was between 2,200 and 2,400 lbs. My personnel Cobra came in at 2,513 lbs. I was in the car, 185 lbs, the gas tank was completely full, 90 lbs.+, my normal tools, cleaning supplies, folding chair, and a blanket, 18 lbs. With all of that subtracted the car comes in about 2,270 lbs. Karl's Cobra was 2,596 lbs. and I believe that that was the weight with him in it. The heaviest Cobra weighted in at 3,023 lbs. It is a trophy winning "West Coast" with a lot of comfort. John

2596# was without my un-svelt lardass. Did have some junk and tools in the boot and everyone knows my boat anchor chevy stuff is chubby. Was interesting to see the results. I am really confused and should have talked to Bernie about the results. I can't understand how my RF LR weight with driver can be lower than without. 1401#s without driver and 1341#s with. The LF RR looks OK at 1464#s with driver and 1195#s without. Oh well, got a nice little sunburn on the drive back. Felt so good.

Karl, SVELTE (svelt): free, released. Slender and graceful: lithe. What are you telling us about your a-- ? This is disgusting - now I've got to get the dictionary just to read these posts. Hey Karl, thank you for driving down here for the weigh-in. It was really nice to see a new Cobra and meet you and your friend. John
