Default VIN/FFR Number and Insurance

I searched the forum and did not find an answer.

I have two insurance companies setup. I plan to use Progressive because my other car is with them but State Farm gave a good quote also.

Here is my problem

They don’t insure until I have a VIN
I need insurance to get the VIN

From reading the threads the FFR MSO number is not the same as the AZ VIN

Can I just tell the Insurance company the VIN is the MSO number, and then call back after the VIN is issued and give them the real VIN?

I just moved back here from VA. They did check my insurance coverage when getting AZ plates on my other cars. I had also read in a thread that they don’t check your insurance card., I don’t think I can count on this

Any thoughts / suggestions?. I still have a few weeks until my car is finished and gets to AZ

Maybe I should not suggest another site, but if you try the following thread it should lead to an answer. Hope it works out in AZ.

Lee,

Thanks. I actually had posted on that thread. The two companies I choose to try require a VIN. It would be easier if I choose another company, but I can't.

The problem for example is that day I drive the car to get registered. I can have insurance on the car (property damage) and add the additional coverage later. But that day I need to full insurance when I go to motor vehicles. I cannot get full coverage without a VIN

Its only problem that exist for 1 day.

MIke, Trailer the car to MVD to register it. THat's what I did. Then I drove it to the insurance place.

Give the insurance company the number off the MSO. For all intents and purposes, that is now tyhe current VIN. Some states will accept this number, and put it on the title. Some states will not, and will assigne a new / second number. If they give you a second number, then call the insurance agent and report the change.

Mike M, What every you wind up with, be sure that the ADOT folks don't title your car as anything newer than a '66. I never had the issue, since my car was already titled as a 66 when I got it, but others have had an ADOT agent not know how to properly register a replica. If you get one of those, stop what you're doing and leave to either go to another office or back to that one later. I've heard that the people at the Greenfield office have done several replicas and know how to do it right. You'll avoid any sort of emission testing issues and you won't have to bother with the "collectable" exclusion.

Mike,
I insured my Backdraft with the Vin/Mso # to Northeast Classic Auto Insurance. The car was insured while in transit from Florida. Once I had registered it in AZ I sent over the new registration to Northeast Classic Auto and they adjusted my proof of insurance tags to match the new AZ vin and Registration calling it a 1965 Ford Roadster.
Hope this helps,
Justin

Thanks for the help.

I plan to go to the Greenfield location, as suggested. I saw this brought up many times in my search.

I called Gordon a few weeks ago and got the rundown on whats needed. I still have a few weeks to go before I go through the process. I'm going to try to add the car to Progressive now based on MSO# and change as needed after title. If no go on Progressive, I'll do State Farm..they were very helpful on the phone and dirt cheap.

'65 for FFRs.
I don't think either Progressive or State Farm will cover it (my Allstate guy couldn't and i've had all my insurance with him for 20 years). you're gonna need Northeast or a similar one. They had no problem starting out with my MSO, then I changed it to the AZ VIN after it was registered.

I have State Farm on my car - they'll do Cobras. You're absolutely right about Allstate. They turned me down and we had been with them for quite a while.

I got the policy on the FFR number and drove to my inspection. After I got my VIN assigned, I went by the State Farm office and gave them the new number. SF was very easy to work with. The best thing about them is you don't have the driving limitations that some of the classic car insurances have.

I called Stella from at State Farm listed in the same link listed by Lee. I'm not sure who Dean in on Chandler is that provided the information but she was great to work with. The quote I got was dirt cheap. So I know State Farm will cover it. I also got good a good person from Progressive that already worked up a partial quote. Both just want a VIN.

I've called 3-4 other Insurance companies listed on this forum or FFCobra and all were good and don't need a VIN. I just prefer to keep with my other car (Progressive) or home (SF) if possible.

Hey Mike, I recommend State Farm. Get a policy with the FFR number. As for the inspection, do as Danr55 said, trailer it to the inspection. Then drive right over to the registration office and get your plates, all done in 2 1/2 hours. Then call your insurance agent and give him the assigned Arizona VIN . No big deal. I have used the ADOT inspection office on Broadway and I-10. Good luck. If you run into a problem stop the process and get back with the Phoenix guys for their recommandations.

My SPFIII is insured with Grundy and they used the MSO until I was assigned an AZ vin#. I have the car insured for a full cash value. That way your investment is totally safe w/o having to barter over any accident. It really isn't that expensive considering the $ you might have into into it. I'd check it out.. Only restriction is low mileage but I'm sure it isn't your daily driver.. So ask yourself...?
