Weekend Day Drive Suggestions?
Now that the weather is better, I look for every excuse to drive.
How about a running list of suggested places to go, drives to make? I am particularly interested in day trips and even smaller trips.
I'll start, depending upon what part of the valley you are from, good drives can be had going to Greasewood Flats and the Farm at South Mountain. For some reason we always end up where there's food and drink.
Where do you go when you have the urge to drive?

From my cave here in East Bumbscrew Mesa, I like to go east to Globe. When I have the time and the urge, I'll detour at Superior to go to Kearny and Winkleman and then on to Globe. There's lots of ups and downs and plenty of curves to push the car around, real nice scenery, and my favorite Mexican restaurant, Chalo's, in Globe. Second choice is going up the Beeline to Payson and points north and or east. Let me kow if you want to head these directions and we may be able to hook up, if you want.

a good ride is up carefree hwy to wickenburg, continue through to vulture mine road turn left. This will take you to I 10 that you can take back home. Good turns, long straights and no traffic. drive safe and watch out for the motorcycles, one may be me.

The drive to Tortilla Flats is interesting as is Saguaro Lake. Jakes Corner and Punkin Center make a nice drive for lunch.

I am thinking of planning a trip for the group to a park called Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, just north of Payson. It has a beautiful setting with a natural stone arch and waterfall with lots of trails around picnic tables and grass fields. Lots of parking and a nice drive for a one day trip.

It just occurred to me, I gotta get out of the off-road state of mind....
Yeah, Vulture Mine Road puts you in my neck of the woods.
The first 15 miles south from Wickenburg are nice and scenic, after that it opens up.
Also, watch the dips in the road for washes/water crossings. Could be ugly at triple digit speeds.
Usually marked very well though....

Dave, I used to live in Wickenburg. When I lived there Vulture Mine Road did not go south for long as a paved road much less all the way to I-10. I would need some confirmation on the paving. Google Earth does not show paved all the way.

Mike B, a trip to the Natural Bridge sounds good. Better get after it before it gets too cold up there. I'll miss it if you go on a Saturday, but a Sunday would be good for me.

I would be keen to join a group on a run to Tonto Natural Bridge - be the first group run for me.

OK....I propose a run on Sunday the 2nd of November. Depart Bee Line Hwy and Shay (Fountain Hills) 10am. Go North on 87 through Payson to the Park. Take picnic lunch, blanket/chairs and hiking shoes. There are lots of tails from easy to hard. Lots of grass areas and BBQ stands. Beautiful valley with a natural bridge waterfall. Return home at your own pace or as a group, up-to-u.
