Hwy Cameras
Don't know if this is for real or not. Got it from a guy in the Corvette club.
Subject: watch how fast you drive - new cameras!!!!
Drive slow or you'll pay for it. DPS has rolled out mobile cameras
throughout the state, and they're now starting to put up stationary
cameras too.
The first nine will be up and running by October 22nd (they're starred
below). The other locations will follow.
When finished, there will be a total of 60 stationary cameras and 40
mobile ones throughout Arizona. If you get a ticket for going 10 miles over the speed limit, you'll pay $181.

Cameras
Thanks Dave, Looks like they left out the south side of town (Ahwatukee and south). Are there any events in the Phx area that you know of where you can get some track time?

Another slant that I recently became aware of is the fact that these highway/red light cameras are being installed/operated by non-governmental organizations ( private ) that get there fees off the top of the fines----

"Big Brother" has officially arrived.
Beware of the portable cams mounted in SUV's and Vans.......parked along the roadside.
This might be a precursor to the BigbrotherObama transfer of wealth to the government program. Tax drivers for going too fast and tax the private radarcam contractor for being a business making over $250'000.
Win Win!
Best regards, Old Bill

I think California has abondoned plans for speed cameras (for now), but we have have a growing number of red light cameras. I've heard that the disputes are clogging up the system. As Jerry mentioned, these things are operated by third party companies, so there are potential confilict of interest issues.
From Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_camera):
"One issue is the potential conflict of interest when private contractors are paid a commission based on the number of tickets they are able to issue. Pictures from the San Diego red light camera systems were ruled inadmissible as court evidence in September 2001.[16] The judge said that the "total lack of oversight" and "method of compensation" made evidence from the cameras "so untrustworthy and unreliable that it should not be admitted".

Too bad I'm not in the license cover business. I've heard that the police will make you remove the refracting covers, but have not heard if there is any penalty involved. If there is none, what would prevent reinstalling the cover at the earliest opportunity. I also have not heard any definitive word about sending out citations if the driver is not identifiable. As for me, I NEVER exceed the speed limit, unless I'm picking my nose to the extent that my face is covered.

Karl, I'll bet you are the main reason there are so many camera way east on 60 around Bumscrew.

I Have To Pass The 3 New Stationary Cameras At 75th, 59th And 35th Eastbound 101 Everyday Going To Work, Oh What Fun!!!
The Best Part Is You Can Go 74 Without Any Issues So Keep It There Until You Go By.
The State Is Trying To Make Tons Of New Revenue And I Am Sure They Will Make A Lot Off Of This.

Be careful at the 35th ave since they had it as a construction zone (55 mph) Also when they make you remove the cover they usually keep them so you are out the cost of the cover

Yeah, just east of Sun Valley Parkway - where I live....
I had a cop tell me he would not write me a ticket if I had a screwdriver handy.
No matter the letter of the law, the cop can still write you a ticket.
You can go to court and "win" if you have the time and inclination.
I have a multi-faceted approach to minimizing the effectiveness of the cameras, I'll post more later.

They will eventually make it an offense to use those covers. In Illinois it is already a violation to "cover or in any way obstruct" a license plate.

Scottdale already has an offense for the reflective covers. Personally, I don't think they work anyway.

Polorized covers are somewhat effective.
At an angle, half the plate is obscured - straight on it's merely a cover.
Most cameras are mounted off at an angle beside the roadway, polorization may help.
I've found getting rid of the reflective ability of the white backgound to be very effective.
Either rough and scuff the paint around the letters, or paint over it with flat white.
The cameras rely on a badass flash to illuminate the plate background, while the letters don't reflect.
On a combination it's fairly effective, but I would not bet money on it.
I have a few other tricks that work on a truck, but are a little too obvious for a car.
This guy lives in Wickenburg, has a bit of a cottage industry going.

I can positively say that the "refractive" covers don't work, to the tune of about $285.00

What about that "spray-on stuff" ? They sell it in the back of several mags. as protection against radar cameras.
Anyone use it?

USA jumping on the camera cash cow bandwagon
Australia could not operate without the millions of dollars that the speed and red light (safety) cameras provide into general revenue. We would have to be the speed camera capitol of the world. Wait till you get the red/speed cameras that get you when you see the amber and you nail it to beat the red you get a speed ticket for going through the intersection over the speed limit or the speed over distance cameras where you are photographed by the first camera with number plate recognition and a few miles up the road you are photographed again and the registrations compared. If you get to the second camera to fast you get a ticket in the mail.
Cheers,
Bryan

Hey Guys:
Believe it or not when the "do gooders" here in Connecticut tried to get cameras on the highways it was shot down in Hartford. It's bad enough we all have devices in our cars monitoring the last 5 or 10 minutes. There are police everywhere with radar guns (since they can't really tell if we're speeding without them). Pretty soon our ez-pass will decide we got to the next toll too quickly and hand us a ticket. George Orwell was right!
Pretty soon we'll all have camers in our houses (in the name of national security of course).

license cover business
I got a ticket too up by Roosevelt year or so back. The guy made me take the cover off. He got me with a gun going opposite way.
Just throw some mud on the plate.
How many times does a cop come up behind you?
Usually they notice the cover when they get you with a gun.
Dam government. Pretty soon they will tell you how to drink water properly. We need a 10 million man/women march on Washington DC to tell these clowns in congress "enough". Blood sucking leaches, but the american folk are weak and just go with the flow. I hope I live long enough to see one of the states tell DC to go pound sand and leave the Union. Which state will it be? We can forget the east or west coasts. They couldn't opperate without government holding their hands. Maybe Missouri

Boy ! I must of got out of AZ at the right time.
I can honestly say there are no cameras around this place. Heck, the speed limit here on the country side roads are 70mph. and sections of I-10 and I-20 are 80mph. You gotta luv that.
Seriously though, I miss you guys and hope I get the chance to visit soon. I really miss the Yarnell Hill run and the famous Tortilla Flats run with the great breakfast.
No. I have not forgotten the terrific times at the Pinks place.
So far things are going well here in Texas. The folks are real nice and I look forward to making new friends here.
We have just now started the construction on the new house so it is very busy right now. I look forward to getting all this done so that we can enjoy the folks and the cars again.
