Unless we track our cars 'touring' or 'crusing' is that's left.

Exactly what part of"You won't get pulled into court and they can't force you to tell them who was driving"don't you understand?

I use this same defense with jury duty notices...works every time. They can't prove you received it and they can't prove that the USPS (running a deficit budget and not withstanding their poor efficiency) delivered it.

However, with car registrations it's a whole different matter. They now have a mechanism (an electronic "lien" system) to attach the citation to an actual vehicle registration.

I still think these things are unconstitutional and challengable in a court of law. It's the time and hassle to go through all of that which most don't have the stomach for. Hence, why cities buy the cams. I'm paying real close attention to this whole AZ measure to see if/when it gets passed to kill these things for good.

Ron, where in Nor Cal are they setting these up? I just drove yesterday from Cal Berkeley (East SF Bay for you non-CA folks) to North OC. Even with a few rest stops we did it in 7 hours flat. Most of Interstate 5 is marked "Max Speed 70mph." I tended to waffle between 70-74 on my cruise control, and most of the time I was having to swing to the #2 lane to allow the occasional 75-80er go on by. Only saw one speed trap in both directions (a CHPer using lazer on the Grapevine...I was doing 74 in a crowd at that moment). Saw a few other CHPers nailing people with instant-on and any obvious offenders (i.e. a bright red NSX).

If my oldest kid ends up at Berkeley or Stanford, it will be absolute torture to drive this OPEN stretch at anything slower than what I did yesterday.

P.S. 110 degrees plus that big honkin' dairy farm in the Central Valley = eye watering moments.

I read that the AZ legislature just passed that the state sponsored cameras are to go away in 2010. There is one judge in the PHX area that throws the citations out of his court since he feels they are not constitutional. Aside from not being able to confront your accuser, my real problem with the cameras, in AZ, is that the authorities use selective posecution. They don't even bother sending a citation to the owner of a vehicle with an out of state license, since they will not follow through with a hand delivered summons, if there is no response to the mailed notification. Originally, the speel was that the cameras were to be used to increase highway safety, but our previous governor saw the financial windfall possibilities and wanted to use the income to balance the state budget. No worries, she's out of state office now....she's comrade Obama's homeland security chief. Janet Napotano.

As far as I know, red light cameras are the only "big brother" surveillance systems that we have in place in the SF and Monterey Bay Area. I read an article somewhere that some Cities are pulling the plug on the camera ticket systems because it's costing more than it's worth to support the infrastructure. I guess in many cases (especially with red light cameras) they have successfully modified behavior, so the revenues have plummeted...but there are still costs to maintain the system.

Driving the Cobra on the street and stabbing it once in a while or speeding is a "pay to play" proposition.

We have got to rid ourselves of this over grown fat bureaucrat system that keeps feeding off the tits of it's occupants. Vote them all out in the next election. Start over.

In the mean time I think I will pay the damn thing. Not worth stressing over.

No points? Your insurance won't go up. Consider it a tax.

I watch my speed.

I've got a new motto:

You can have fun going fast.

... but ...

You don't have to go fast to have fun.

Big people know that speed differential is the most dangerous of all public road situations, so they avoid closing in quickly on people who just use cars to get from place to place and not as enhancements to cover their inferiority. Before that winds up your immature personality , be assured that I have driven a lot faster in a car than you ever would dare. Ask around...

By the way, Fitz failed to mention that the 55 zone is the construction area on the 101 and that to fight these things in court changes the rules if you are convicted. Instead of that tiny fine, they will give you the double fine construction zone thing and the points which they do not do if you just pay the thing and forget it. It is a business transaction , pure and simple. If it is you, just do something that doesn't happen too often any more - admit that they caught you and pay for your mistake...

If it were me, I would pay and then try not to do it again.

No points, no foul.

until you are served by an "officer of the law" the citation is unconstitutional. By signing you are giving up your right to a court hearing which is protected by our constitution. Unless certified or registered mail, you have not been served.
