I moved here from San Francisco and had no problem with registration at all. I went to one of the recommended offices in Mesa off of Greenfield, just south of the US60. I think they registered it as a 1965 special constructed vehicle. Smog exempt and very few $$$ for the whole process. They will give a quick inspection but they really didn't look at much except the VIN, which the Calif CHP put on the frame after I completed the construction. Good luck.

Keep using the words "kit car", "special constructed", "1965 Cobra," "Replica" and "Collector Car." Arizona will license the auto for what it looks like. You should also have "Collector Car" insurance to show them. You will end up with a 1965 vehicle and next to no plate fees. ($18.50 per year). Now is the time to look for a vanity plate. ($25 per year.)
Way back when I registered mine I simply shut up and let them decide everything.

I almost had to pay too much money to register mine only because a "supervisor" happened to pass by during the delicate transaction and almost ruined it. Remember, you always have an escape route by politely saying you've changed your mind, then simply leave and go to another office where they are more reasonable. I was about a minute away from that when suddenly the tide turned and things went back to normal -- $36 for two years, registered as a 1965 Ford.
