Harry, I'm not convinced. We all know how much work goes into building one of these or any car from scratch. Seems like a lot of trouble for a B grade when they could have just used a Torana or Falcon, even a Capri or another porsche. The budget for building the car would have been almost half the entire movie budget.

If the film was released '87, it would have had to have been built '85-'86. I was looking for a kit then and all I could find was Autostyling in WA,
Bob Darnell was just starting with the Robnell, maybe George V, a few others like Rob Grave and then partner Paul Wooley(later of WE) -G-Force, and they were all building 427 chassis. No one was doing smaller MK 1. It has a most authentic stance and character.

Having said that, the seats and steering wheel aren't Cobra, and it was a bit risky driving it that hard on a cliff edged road.

Love the tow hitch on the H.O.

my copy arrived today. Reasonable quality considering that there is no way of telling how much work the tape had done, or how old it was before being transferred to dvd.
There is a dodgy bit (about 10 secs) in the middle where the tape played up but otherwise ok. Not too bad for a low budget flick

Running on empty is a great Aussie B movie. Bought it on DVD a few years back. I must dig it out and watch it again.

Cheers
Aussie Mike, that is just WAAAY too cool! "You're too much!" Even though it was a B movie, I LOVED it! If you think about it, a lot of the gearhead movies we love from back then were B movies (Vanishing Point, Two Lane Blacktop, Dirty Mary - Crazy Larry, etc.

I don't think this is available in the US on DVD. All I have is a crappy recording of it on VHS. Is that the only clip of the movie on the net?

Thanks for posting, -Eric

Got my copy today and the review is as follows...

The tracking is slightly off and I only had sounds out of the right speaker. At 57:57 until 58:12 there is some flickering from the VHS copy.

Reminds me of an aussie version of a cross between Beverley Hills Cop and Miami Vice. A very 80s period piece, big hair, porn mostaches, electric drums in the backing tracks...

Just realised the plates on the van in the opening scene and had a giggle (6ULDV8).

The next scene would do Mad Max justice with a bunch of psychos in an F100 in a keystone cops chase.

The highlights are the pieces that are on YouTube with the best chase being the jag going after the cobra on the great ocean road. I don't think I'd be throwing the jag sideways when there were no guardrails!

An entertaining piece but has withered with age.

I give it a 7.

A bit of history on Running on empty.

Many years ago I was playing golf at St Michaels Golf CLub (La Perouse) in Sydney. We played the first and then walked to the second tee. There is an access road and scrubland nearby. Anyway we heard this noise and a procession of hot cars rumbled past followed by utes with movie cameras mounted on the back. We immediately thought it was filming for Mad Mad 3. We watched for several minutes as the cars kept doing passes by. We went home and told our mates we saw the filming of Mad Max 3. Years later I watched Running on Empty and recognised the cars. The scene at the start of the second youtube clip posted above is the scene we saw filmed.

From this description, the car must be COB6035.

So I'm typing away at work and over the partition Bridget is asking Steve what movies he's worked on

He starts running through the list and I hear

"....Running from the guns"

I stop and poke my head 'round the corner

Steve looks at me and says "...that's right - your thingys"

I ask Steve if he has a copy of the film - he thinks so and we chat about it for a bit.

Steve relays stories about work on the sequence on the great ocean road - and how the policeman who was stopping traffic at the other end looked a bit green after the stuntman retrieved him in the cobra

Next day Steve turns up with a 'Used only once - time coded - copy of Running from the guns' along with some photos from his portfolio (keen photographer)

The cassette is now on my desk at home waiting for me to tranfer it to a digital medium.

....amazing....

I guess the doors didn't work on the Cobra? All that jumping in and out and such.

Maybe I should try that? Probably miss and end up crippled on the gear shift...

LoBelly, just shows how small the world really is.

Once you get it to digital I would happily buy a copy from you.

I like the Jamiesons on the desk too.

Obviously the film & copies of it are not mine to sell - I am simply making a digital back up to preserve a 'unique' piece of our cultural heratige

I think cental australia would provide a stable climate to house such a backup - thankyou for the offer.
