SUV tyres on a pre-ADR vehicle?
This is for the guys that are building or who already have old toys in the garage, as it's the pre-ADR ruling on tyres that I'm interested in.
From what I can see of the National Code of Practice, all it mentions is that the tyres needs to have at least the load rating, plus a speed rating of at least 120kmh (for a pre-1969 vehicle).
If I want to go with a tyre designed for an SUV so that I can get a reasonably wide and tall radial tyre, is there any problem with that? If anything, the SUV tyres are at least 50% higher load rating, plus a higher speed rating than I need...
Thanks for any input.

Good question, one I should probably check on.
When I got new tyres for the Valiant, I wanted white walls, the ones I got are actually Light truck tyres (ones that Telstra use), never even gave it a thought.

I have been looking at tyres by size recently as I have had to replace the two rears.
I have noticed (after placing the order - doh) that there are a number of SUV tires that would fit the bill.
The 'muscle car' tyres like BFG/Firestone are typically of a lower speed rating [S, T] and have a UTQG rating of 450+ (hard) whereas you can get some (apparently) softer compounds for SUVs with higher speed ratings [H, W] notices some silica (?) tyres too.
I believe that a Vic Club member is getting some Toyo SUV tyres in 295/50/15 (?)
I think I would like to eyeball a few and see how he goes but I have a strong suspicion that that's where the next set of daily drivers will come from.

Sport truck tyers
About 6-7 years back some NSW guys, in particular Kevin Walker, were running Toyo Proxes S/T (Sport Truck). These came in 295/50-15 and 275/60-15 and were H rated.
Pic below is from 2001 trade price list. Not sure if still available.

Thought I might as well post my previous enquiries. See below.
Thankyou for your enquiry Steve
The 2 tyre sizes you have chosen for your Cobra Replica will make matching the tyres to make vehicle handling as balanced as possible difficult.
Most manufacturers, including Toyo will have different patterns in 225/60R15 & 295/50R15 tyres sizes.
We have only one pattern available in either size, which are both quite different.
The 295/50R15 size is only available in the Proxes ST. The Proxes ST is really designed for heavier vehicles and is likely not to provide the drive / traction you require on the rear axle of your Cobra Replica.
The 225/60R15 size is available in the TEO plus only. The TEO plus is closer in performance to what you require for your vehicle, but I would recommend a tyre with higher grip levels for this vehicle type.
Regardless of what brand you purchase, I would recommend you choose a high performance tyre for both axles, the same tyre pattern would be the best option. To do this you will need to use different tyre sizes compared to the sizes you have quoted.
Products like the Toyo Proxes T1R or Proxes R1R would be most suitable for your vehicle.
I hope this is helpful.

Trouble is he didn't really pay attention to my tyre sizing as the suggested high performance alternate tyres don't even come close in the sizes needed.
I too am awaiting feedback from the club member who is buying the 295 SUV Toyos to see what he thinks.
Failing that a matching set of Yoki 352's including 295/50 rears can still be got, but just like always, any of these 15" choice tyres are only reasonable in terms of grip level.
Cheers

I gotta suspicion Craig does not want these tyres for a Cobra.

That's right, it's not for a Cobra. It's a pre-'69, pre-ADR car that needs a pretty tall tyre out the back to fill the guards. I'm looking at tyres of the type of width and diameter that are fitted to Cayennes, X5s and Q7s.
