Hummers only tow a just over 2t and thats in the auto plus the fuel economy is the same as a Territory.

the Prado we took for a test drive today was very noisy....not what you would expect for a new car really was not impressed and for that they have missed out on a sale...

we once had a 95 Magna (dont tell anyone) they would have to be one of the quietest cars i have ever driven, but that would be about all it has going for it.......I still dont know how you can pick your poor girls up in it I feel so embarrass for them...lol

Hi Spooky,

Over the years, we've had a lot of tow vehicles as my wife & kids all have horses, so we've been towing various horse floats around for over 20 yrs...

In my opinion, the Landcruiser is the best compromise between comfort and ability to tow...We have had the 200 series twin turbo diesel for a couple of years now and it's an awesome tow vehicle....Could not fault it.

No worries regarding the Prado, My main observation pointis from a bush perspective I guess, so noise levels are not a concern when traveling at 130+ on dirt roads.
Regarding the 200 series, they look great but have had a major issue with chassis snapping off at the bull bar mounts, again most likely only an issue for bush cars.

I suppose that is why teh world is what it is, everyone has different perspectives, I have a mate who just got rid of his Disco 3 and bought a 120 series Prado (previous model - stopped being sold 11/2009)
I have another mate who towed his 18ft tinnie from Booraloola to Alice on the 1 tank (180 litres)

Look it ain't a bad car but the all wheel drive one I have is AWFUL on fuel and that is before you even start towing anything. All I can really compare it to is the 100 series cruiser which is a V8 petrol and overall I much prefer to drive the cruiser. I know there is a rather large price difference between the two but it's just what I reckon.

I have been looking at replacing my tow car also and have my eyes fixed on a new Holden SSV 6litre ute.

I have the seats down permanently in the Kombi so it serves as a ute most of the time. Think I will have to sell it privately as trade-in price for Kombi is not to good.

If anyones interested it is a ;

and the best tow car I've ever owned.

Hey Leeroy, I think we ran into each other at the servo at last years Nats. I was with Ozvenom in the black Towrag! Or was that the year before???? Mine is/was the V6 petrol. Towing the race car I was getting about 14ltr's to the 100k.

I reckon the Towrag is an excellent car for towing...The main "problem" is that its too nice to tow with! I was forever telling Scotty to stop throwing the bloody race tyres in the back and making the hoodlining black! Lol
I could drive that car all day towing and still get out refreshed where as the SS ute had me aching after an hour!

If my situation was different I'd just go buy an F250 as I love full size trucks and there awesome towing presence. My Dad brought me up on a constant stable of F350 duell'ees with 351's and its in me now....

Sadly, my wallet can't afford such luxuries at this stage!

I've got a bit more time to think about it but I need something sorted by the time the Shannons round comes along as I will be running my new car! At this stage it might end up being its debut! Would prefer not but $'s time and more $'s preclude getting it run n any earlier!

i have to agree with mike here, and you might not be able to afford one, but ive just bought a new range rover sport tdv6, for a car that weighs 2.4t then hook up the cobra on the back [3500kg towing cap] it averages 12 lts per 100ks at 110kph, thats preety impresive, and you hardly know its on the back.without towing ive seen it drop into the 7ltrs per 100ks, thats half what a landcruiser will slurp, all in luxury and the best off road capability and 15000k service intervals. the disco 4s are the same setup, just not quite as plush, so phil go and buy that disco its state of the art motoring, i guarantee you will not regret it. so any of you that have got the coin dont dismiss a land rover just go and take one for a drive. also i just sold my territory awd ghia to get into the sport and didnt really have any problems with it, i was very happy with it, its just not in the same league as this thing. cheers tomcat

How did the sums go when you considered:

Trailer purchase cost / rego / maintenance,
Purchase price / running costs / depreciation of a big@rse 4WD,
Compromising what you want in a day to day car vs towing requirements,
Storage space for trailer,
etc, etc, etc

...as opposed to just getting Dave from Trailertow to get you out to the track when you need to and having a nice everyday car for the other 99.5% of the driving you do?

You missed a great '05 Black Dual cab.. F250.. tub. V8 on GraysOnline last week went for about $42k.
Depending on your budget why not import one and convert????The right hand kits are available and engineering won't set you back a huge amount, my father-in law is soon looking at bringing in a couple of F350 SuperDuty's and the right-hand kits.
Plenty of great deals from Texan dealers in US!!!

Hmmm Craig... yep I hear u... Ozvenom said to me once that if you worked out what racing cost per lap you'd never do it! As I own 1 1/2 race cars as we speak, plus an exy alumnium trailer, plus a bloody exy race car used 10 odd times a year in a full season knowone in their sane mind would do it...and yet most of us reading this would do it everyday of the week...

I'm owed quite a bit of money and until i see it (if I ever do) I may just get Dave to transport my car to QR for 3 days for SMC... We'll see.

As Tomcat said, yep a RR is a beautiful car... I test drove one before I got the Towrag and loved it but I'm really wanting to move away from the bigger $'s for such cars if I can.... I'm experiencing my own little GFC at the moment!

Hey Oz... Yep I have thought of this option but again $'s will be an issue....I reckon. I'd love an F250 Space cab.... I must watch grays more as they have some good stuff on there....

Having said that, I imported my car trailer and my race car stuff from there (the states just puts alot of aussie stuff to shame even before you factor in the strong AUD) so it may be time I stopped paying customs. I'm almost there number 1 customer!

Got to stop thinking about F trucks......

We have an '05 F250 space cab 9' Tub,Turbo 6 Diesel. Absolutely loves the tow with 2 x 1000ltr totes in the tub and a Car trailer another 3 x 1000ltr can't remember mpg but very econ.and definitely not underpowered even though I love the V8, this thing gets up and goes !!!.......

Nah still single, that's why I'm accumulating impractical toys while no-one's looking over my shoulder! I can give practical advice to others though...

Spook for not a lot of money, you could get into a classic truck. Not as comfortable as a new one, but you'll never lose money on it. This one's a perfect billboard to colour match the race car paint scheme...

Now you and I are on the same page for the last 12 mths I've been lookin for a sweet '51 for the perfect tow!!
I even have 3 models 1/18 ,1/24 and 1/64 scale in the combo with trailer and Cobra in tow,the 1/18 i had custom made!!:
