Getting started!!??
Hey guys I'm new to the forum and chasing info.
I've always loved the cobra's and I've decided to finally do something about it.
I want to do a kit but were do I start??
I'm a Mechanical Engineer with access to a full machine and fabrication shop so I want to do as much myself as possible.
So which Aussie kits are the best value for money?? Whats required as far as rego is concerned??
What are my options?????????
Thats in advance.
Twig.

Welcome Twig! Which state are you in? This question of yours will start the usual range of useful suggestions. You could also start here:
Best Oz Kit Poll
There are more Cobra kits than ever available now and you should also subscribe to the Aussie Kit Car mag for lots of info. NSW seems the most difficult state in which to achieve registration at this stage but these things are usually regressive.
Cheers,

The rules have recently changed in Vic, you can now run whatever engine/induction you want, but your ICV has to pass a cut-down version of the ADR37 emissions test. This means a factory tune LS1 should pass as long as your cat/exhaust combo doesn't foul up the tune. If you can get a big block with webbers to pass this test then your engine/induction implementation will be ticked as legal.
You have to undergo this test even if you install a factory tuned current brand new motor that has passed even more stringent emissions tests (like an LS3).
The above is my understanding from what the engineers have told me over the past two months or so.

Few Fords you can fit too Twig, for that authentic combination .... Quad Webbers could be a challenge on a street car now.

Ok.
Webbers are more like a dream than reality.
I know its stupid but I dont like modern efi engines in Cobra's.
My thoughts for a start was to buy a wreck of a EB to AU manual V8 falcon and run that with a Holly. Go with the KISS method.

A friend up here building a Harrison just got a very good 2002 XR8 motor and 5 speed 'box for $2800. The MassFlow EFI give the appearance of a carb.

If you've got the money Twig, you can have just about whatever rear end you want! Seriously though, Aussies are grafting in Skyline IRS, late model Commodore, Factory Five, the list goes on.
Depending on how much dish you want, you may find a few of the kits can be ruled out due to the rear track being too wide.

Paul and I have the Nissan GTR rear end in Harrisons. That can be a hassle with its slightly low 5th gear ratio, but there is a lot of acceleration available!

Twig I guess what this banter shows is "horses for courses". With say a live 9" you have countless ratios to choose from and plenty of fabricators out there. If you plan to build a drag queen you might want a toughened powerglide - provided that's still the weapon of choice. A circuit car or hill climber wants more ratios than that though. I doubt any of this is news to you, but if you can narrow it down hopefully a few more people will chime in.

I was told a 9" gives the car an understeering attitude as it wants to push straight. Anyone with such a diff care to comment on how true this is?
