Default Boxhead's bush trip August 2010

Last Sunday the 8th, I headed out bush for a week of stocktake at a couple of clinics down on the lands.

I had done some research before heading down and was given a definate location of one Valiant Charger and a possable heads up on a second Charger.
I also had a little spare time and plans of driving down some roads I have not been on yet.
On the way down I spotted a XA/B Town & Contry wagon, I dont know how rare or unusual these are?






And what probably bought about its demise.


I then also found an XY Fairmont that I grabbed the front and rear screen trims from for a mate out here who is restoring his GT.

After chasing down the fella who told me about the first Charger I finally found him on Tuesday morning, and we went out to look at the Charger.
If you did not know it was there, you would never see it, this is the view from behind the homeland (private property, where family groups live - which is 200metres from the road)














Then just nearby is this little Hilman Hunter.

Then in the same jumble of cars as the Billy Bunter are a few more.
Here is an old G60 Patrol.






Here is an old series 1 Landrover head, they are sidevalve on the exhaust side.




And now something for the motorbike guys. I have no idea what they are?




And some old purple fords.





The XT/XR has power steering.


I then spotted this off in the distance, I thought "I will take that home, gotta find the rest of it.


Turns out to be a trailer.

This was home from Wednesday night till Saturday.


And here is a Wiki info.

I planned a long drive home on Saturday, with directions on how to locate the second Charger and directions to a little used road that was cut in for the mail run.

So with mud map directions (all verbal - turn left at bonnet, turn right at big tree etc) I headed off looking for another Charger.
After what was starting to feel like too long a drive, I came upon the sign I was waiting for.
Here is what I found.






Here is some bush mechanics.
That is a 1980's engine in a mid to late 60's Falcon, So us Dark siders are a long way short of being the first to fit a late model engine.


And here is an old XB Ute.


An XP sedan.


An old FC ute, I will get some of teh bright work off this one for mine.


Here are some old trucks out at Fregon tip.
The one on the bottom is an AT4 like I have at home, but not much left.




An old EJ sedan.


A HK/T or G rear tub from a ute, in pretty good shape too, roof is damaged though.


And a Valiant VG sedan.




And for Hersh. Here are some I have dragged home to play with.
Here is an FC Ute.
Plan is to customise with a roof chop and fins from an EK wagon.




And here is a Charger I have retrieved from out bush, I have made a start on this one.
I bought another Charger that was being converted into a speedway racer as the floor in the one I found was rusted out from sitting on the desert sand.


This is when I got it home.


And this is it now.
Rust cut from inner rear quarter.


Outer quarter replaced.


I used the speedway car as the base, but the firewall and roof where shagged, these sections where good on the red one.
So they became donors.

Always interesting pics. Two questions jump to mind:

What inspires a mindless dead$hit to jump up and down on the roof of a car then tip it over?

How do you register a car that you found in the bush?

The first one I can not answer as I wonder about it too, especially when the reason for stopping is more often that not a lack of fuel.

They get tipped over to rmove parts.

As far as getting registered, I checked with the MVR before I startd on the red one, I have to do a revs check (to make sure it is not stolen or monies owed against it) and if that is ok then pictures of it as found and proof of wanting ownership (this is done by showing reciepts that money has been spent on it, they figure if you spent money on it you have an intent to own it).

What a great story this would be for a classic car
episode! I saw a Charger like the red one at Phillip Island. Man, was that a neat car. The Ute would be a ripper, as you say, here in the States. I never saw one like that and I love Utes. They call them rancheros or El caminos over here.

Back in the bad old days a friendly copper advised me that if a vehicle was found and you restored it there was always the possibility the original owner could show some sort of proof and you could lose the whole lot to him with no compensation for work done.
Sounds like you have it sussed and sorted tho.

The old FB ute looks reasonably straight.

Thats ute is going to be sweet. Imagine the possibilities with only 1950s ADR requirements. I would love to have the room to provide an orphanage for all those unwanted cars.

Zedn, space is a problem I do not lack, and with teh big shed going up soon (but no slab till next year) then I will also have enough room to fit projects in and out of the sun.

The plan for the Ute is to get a Station Wagon (I just happen to know where there is one)




I will use the main body (excluding roof) of the Wagon and fit the Ute roof and side panels as required.
Should end up something like this.
