Default Car radio antenna

I am considering fitting a 1960's radio in my car (with FM and iPod upgrade internally). Those of you who have fitted radios/stereos, what kind of hidden antenna did you use that actually works? I am not that keen on the windscreen mounted ones.

Hi have an Audi A4 that has a hidden antenna that works well. I dont even know where it is.

It might be worth searching ebay for euro car antennas. That is provided they dont use the metal of the body.

Default Am/fm

Hi Merv,

I used a powered AM/FM internal antenna and it only picked up FM.

The AM signal is much weaker than the FM.

Thanks Liam. I know of them. Subarus have the antenna built into the windscreen and my Merc has a little fin on the roof for the phone and radio.

There must be other ways?

Hey Merv,

You could ask Peter Hancock....he installed mine when he did all the wiring, and it's hidden away behind the dash.

Cheers,
Warren.

Merv,
I used a "Stealth" aerial. It is a powered aerial probably similar to the one Stiffy used. From memory the module measures about 125mm x 30mm x 16mm with about 2.5mtrs of lead. Fitted behind the dash in the AC Cobra and in the windscreen pillar of the 540. Works OK on FM, have not tried it on AM. It cost about $35 from WOW Sight and Sound.

Hi Warren. This is the one I think: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Stealth-Hidde...-/130431349985

Which seem much the same as; http://www.amazon.com/Hidden-Antenna.../dp/B001QYSXAS

Question is do they work? FM seems fine in most reports.

Have a look at 'Secret Audio' they have period radios with new innards. They have totally hidden radios. They have mp3 stuff as well as hidden aerials.

Thanks Rob. I have already got the radio on the way. 1968, underdash model that is removable, with iPod and similar connections. Will check Secret Audio out. The Germans are very big on period radios!

The Audis are in the rear window, under the demister, it looks like another few rows of demister coil, at least I assume that's what that thing is on my car! The wagons are in the left rearmost side window ("boot window"), same as Subaru wagons I think. That is for a B7, I think the new ones have a shark fin similar to BM and Merc.

Was that what you meant?

Merv,
The one on ebay looks the same as the ones I bought, but cheaper.
FM works OK, AM I don't know as I have never tried it.

It's almost cricket season Warren! The old AM 612 could be in demand.

Merv early Valiant/Mitsubishi Galants & Lancers used the boot lid as the car aerial, so running a suitable AM/FM aerial around the inside of the boot lid might be an unseen option for you. Something to consider anyway.

In the description it states that it uses RF frequency which according to the description you do not have to be in direct sight of the radio. Does this mean you can mount it in the trunk and still be able to operate it?

Will check that out thanks Rob. Nothing at WOW or Repco that was other than windscreen mounted.
