Benny,

I think they have been confirmed as the 25,26 and 27th March 2011.

Yes you are

there is a classification matrix that defines how your car will classed.

(from Reptyl's gallery)

I am unsure if there is a plan to review this matrix before ShelbyFest 2011

Excellent, thanks LoBelly. Slicks are cheaper than DOT tyres! And more sticky.....

Are slicks much better than R spec tyres? I have never used them and would be keen to know what they are like.

Before you all run out and get slicks.

The organising committee will be meeting tonight to discuss this exact point.
Last year we had a large number of cars running in the Anaconda class because of the popularity of the imported "road/track" tyres.
These drivers were pulled from the other classes because of the obvious advantage these tyres provide.
Running slicks would provide a huge advantage again over these tyres and as such would not allow for the most level of playing field in the Anaconda class.
We have only had 2 cars in the past 5 years that have run slicks. The drivers entered all events and times recorded, but agreed not to be classified in the official results.

It's getting harder and harder to fairly classify the cars in these types of events.
May be time to talk to NSW about re-gigging the classes at both major events and come up with a new National classification system that all states can use.

I wouldn't be buying any more slicks..... we run on them up here. The only event we use grooved tyres for are the Nationals. They have advantages and disadvantages. Yes they provide more grip when they are hot, but if they are cold they are very slippery...... definitely slower than grooved until you get them hot, which could be a couple of laps. It's not just a case of bolting on slicks and going faster. The suspension works differently too. Have to change toe in and camber caster etc to make the most of it.

I enjoy the Shelby fest as it is fairly layed back and the small entrant numbers makes for an relaxing fun weekend.

Only that you have opened this issue I do think the classing is unfair and the policy on tires too vague. Last shelby fest had 5 entrants running cars with Slicks or full Race tires and they all were in the competition and are in the official results.

Jason, the nationals system is not bad and when you exclude the womens, Race car and others there are only 4 classes just like shelby fest.

I don't understand the Modular LS class when you look at the Nationals results it is still dominated by the windsor engine I don't think there is an advantage there except for your wallet.

Good luck with your discussion, it is not an easy topic.

Phil

I too think that there needs to be more thought put into classes based on tyre choice.

It has been shown over and over that R Spec tyres gain seconds over street tyres, how much extra power do you need to gain that with engine mods or capacity increases?

Looking forward to Shelbyfest again next year.

Ben

Guys,

Any updates on the classing for slicks? Maybe you could just have a racecar class which included slicks and unregistered (race) cars. Just a thought.... Momentum is gathering up here..... more Qld'ers coming down now. At least 3 Dart blocked 6 litre windsors that I know of to take care of the LS engines..... All running slicks....

It's my job to review/revise/recommend the classes for ShelbyFest 2011/12 and I apologise for my tardiness.

Part of this week's to-do list.

Thankyou for your suggestions.
