I wasn't suggesting to lock it into neutral, I was suggesting to lock it into reverse...the example I mentioned was a mechanical linkage, as suggested by Boxhead, but if that was achievable with a linkage 35years ago, I don't see why you can't do the same thing with a solenoid today.

Not true - Section 6.3 of ADR 25 related to "Protective devices acting on the gearshift control"...
"6.3.2. In the case of manual gearboxes it must be possible to lock the gear shift lever in reverse only; in addition locking in neutral shall be permitted."

thats weird locking gearshift in reverse
just remmeber to take it out of reverse befroe u start it hehehe
hey hsv how do u start the bmws
just need key in proximity of the car then press the button
and if u the key is not in proximity of the car can u turn the steering wheel

I believe the steering is locked until you unlock the car then just push the starter and away you go.

In the case of the Valiant, it is manual gearbox, you turn the key from "lock" position to first click, then you can move the gearstick into neutral, the key can not be removed once it is off "lock" position.
Another keyless car is the 150 series Prado.
I have also seen SAAB with key in centre that are manual gearbox.

Hey Sideshow,
I had a new Suzuki Kisashi on hire last week in Sydney, no keys, just a fob, car unlocked when i came to within about 3 meters and locked itself when i moved out of that range, could not tell if the steering locked, as it was always unlocked when i got in the car, nice big black push button for start, no keys any where.
I should have sat in it while my son walked away with the fob to see if the steering wheel locked, alarm would probably have gone off.......
It was a manual, had to depress clutch for button start to function.

They did that in a top gear episode. Whilst one of them was in a cafe with the key, the other guys secretly jumped in the car (i think it was a camaro). They drove it out onto the highway where it died and left it there. I think the range was about 20m.
The new Lancer and Outlander also have proximity keying.
Either way, it all comes back to the electronic steering lock being scary.
Dont some of the t56 models use a lockout solonoid for reverse? Perhaps that could be used?
All sounds like more trouble than its worth to me. I am just going to do my best to fabricate a column cover that is as small as possible and just live with the key in this location.

it has push button start
need a degree to figure how it all works

Hi Guys,
Newbie here - have been lurking for a while soaking up as much info as I can - thanks. I drove a VW Toureg recently that had a keyless ignition. It was one of those twin tirbo V10 Diesel jpbbies - impressive pickup & speed for a 2 tonne diesel. Anyway I had to click the button on the key to unlock the car, then the start button had a red light around it until I put my foot on the brake pedal when it changed to green, then and only then could I push the start button. Not sure about the steering lock though.

Sideshow, Doesn't that ISIS system allow you to go keyless and just use a fob to secure everything electronic, and then when code releases you can start the car with the fob, or dash button? Again though, immobilizer not steering lock.

yes the isis can or will soon have wireless controller that will stop car from starting
we havnt fitted an isis system since we did chic henrys car
so we are not really worried bout it these days
no one in australia really is interested as its bit expensive and they can buy it cheap thru their website so its not worth us buying it as more u buy the cheaper it is for us
but we dont have the population for it in australia
we prob wont even help anyone over the phone if they have probs if they bought it eleswhere we would just say bring car in and we can look at it
im really over rewiring full cars whether isis or custom it takes ages to sort it out
especially if u have to go back n forth a million times hehehe
so ive upt my prices for anyhting like that just over it spendign ages for nothing
heheheehehe
anyway enough of bagging em out hheehe
all that stuff is electronic side of things
steering lock has to be mechanical thats the hardest thing to build if u dont have a key and ignition switch with a lock on the column
in the end people try to reinvent the wheel and 99% of the time its doesnt work but sometimes it does
when its so bloody hard to register one of these u really need to keep it simple
i havnt touched a cobra in a year i guess
not sure if thats a good or bad thing hahahaahahah i really should stop being smart asss
sign of the times i think
