Electronic Stability Control ( E.S.C.) a requirement for all new Vic Cars ?...
This matter may have already been addressed on a previous thread, and I've missed it, but I've been asked by a couple of my Queensland guys about the new requirements for E.S.C. on ALL Vic cars built from January 2011 onwards.
Is this the case...or have I misread the attached requirements? http://vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Safe...anuary2011.htm My concern is certainly for the Victorian guys...but also there are certain Queensland cars under construction...and these things have a habit of spreading !! It was brought up in the previous ESC thread about 9 months ago that it would come in Jan 2011. Vic decided to implement it early. Apparently Vic roads have already granted an exemption to ICVs. That is what one of the manufacturers said on the OzClubby forum (i think it was Arrow). Worth ringing a Vic engineer to double check though. Liam |
Yes it has been discussed before. ESC became mandatory for new cars in Victoria from 1 January 2011. Other states are 1 November 2011 I believe, although I don't see manufacturers pushing different models for different states, so apart from old stock I would guess Victoria either isnt selling any new cars (not) or this makes the ESC situation effectively current now for all states by default, if not by law.
ICV's in Victoria are exempt from the ESC requirement (according to the VASS engineer I spoke to) in a similar fashion to how they are exempt from the crash testing requirement. Although, I don't believe that you need to display a "this car has no ESC" sticker in the same fashion as you are required to display a "this car has not been crash tested" sticker in a visible fashion. Does ESC work with rear drum brakes ? A lot of small cars and Utes have drum brakes still.

Why not Sambo, disk would be more efficient (hence why most modern cars have disk brakes) but no physical reason why it could not work.

I just can't see the many-pulses-per-second being carried out by a disc brake setup. Maybe they've come a long way since the HT Premier I used to have?

Only problem with drum brakes is getting the wheels speed sensor to work.
However, ESC is not something that can be just bolted on to car. You need the ABS unit, the yaw sensor and wheel speed sensors. You then need a computer that is tuned to the weight and dynamics of the car. As was said in the previous post (by i think classic revival) BOSCH charge $1M to develop this. |
