Default LS Engine Oil Cooler Adaptors

Hi People,

I need to add an engine oil cooler to the Daytona, like the driver it gets a bit HOT on the track.

I am running the 2009/2010 Camaro sump ( for extra ground clearance ) so I need an adaptor to suit, anyone done this already??

Part numbers would be great.....

Maybe try the LS1 forums... NOt to incite Dark side hatred....
I am thinking there will be plenty of guys there been there done that with LS motors.
Usually you just get a spin on adapter and some braided line with an inline thermostat. When it gets hot it runs to the cooler when it is cold it just goes straight back into the engine.
But I am guessing you already know that.... Sorry can't help with part numbers..

Stiffy, did you try Fraser at Speedinc? That's where I got our sumps from. He's based in the states but active on the Aussie LS1 forum as well. PM me if you want his MSN address.

There's a few options out there.

I originally made this adapter for Phil N to go in place of the Oil filter. He was running a remote filter setup too.

A while back I bought this adapter from VPW in Epping. It's a nice Billet piece and fits OK with the Camaro sump. I have an Earls external oil thermostat but this adapter allows you to retain the original oil filter. It bolts on the side of the sump to a boss just above the oil filter.

http://www.vpw.com.au/productgroup.a...&PrdGrpID=4833

I'm now looking at changing it for the MOCAL LS1 oil thermostat. This combines the adapter and oil thermostat all in one so no need for an external oil thermostat. This will make for fewer connections and a neater hose run. It bolts on the same place as the VPW adapter above.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Cheers

Looks good Michael, I reckon that has just been added to my shopping list, a cooler is a must for the correct look. Should blend in well with my non legal lights and fans?

Default Idea's

SAMBO,

I will drop him an email.

Aussie,

I like this set up, I will most likely need to run an oil cooler at the rear
of the car with little fan attached as there is no room at the front

Boxy,

MICHAEL, Very official.....

are any CR's out there running a power steering cooler, or no track boilover issues with such a light car? I know LSx dunnydores have boilover issues with that pump and reservoir but I guess maybe a CR front end is to to light to have the same problem?

sorry for the semi-hijack, but it is still an oil cooler

Definately get an power steering cooler - I have one and it still gets hot. Its the inline finned type. Gets even hotter when the stig drives the car.

Default coolers

Modena,

I run a power steering cooler on the Daytona.
The pump is the issue, not the weight.

I have replaced the pump with a BF turbo resealed uint and high temp synthetic fluid, seems to have fixed the problem.

Stiffy, I'm running Castrol Transmax Z synthetic ATF in my power steering - your choice also? I'm putting it in my T56 after it does a few thousand kms. Much better shifts apparently.

I run a power steer cooler, and a much larger tank.

Seems fine!

I've got the Mocal unit as well from ThinkAuto in the UK, quite compact and you can order it for -8, 10 or 12 JIC hoses. Not shiny as a billet unit though. Just need to get home to fit it

Cheers

Default Oils aint oils,,,,,

SAMBO,

Thants the stuff. It was recommended by Aussie Mike for the box and the guy who did the pump.

The pump guy doesn't think you need to run a cooler with his pump
and the synthetic fluid, but I wanted to be sure.

I also replaced the main pulley with a 25% reduction unit, again for the heat issue. All the mods seem to have worked ( last time on the track it was fine ) it still gets hot and the fluid will weap out of the reserviour.
The only issue is that at idle the volts drop.

I was hoping someone wasn't going to ask that! I kept the photo but not the link as I didn't fit an oil cooler to my LS7 ... I was searching the internet for "LS Engine oil cooler" at the time, but can't re-find the site I found before.

I searched again today and found:

http://www.speedflowshop.co.uk/ls-ch...nds-1396-p.asp

And if you just want a takeoff plate and not a whole kit:

http://www.partsworldperformance.com...se_adapter_kit

These are from UK sites ... but I think they are standard GM parts for the LS Engine so you might be able to source them from the US or perhaps Holden in Australia?

I just blew up one of the photo's of the adaptor part and can read the suppliers name. The link to them is:

www.mihperformance.com

Regards, Mike

Stiffy! Just wondering what temp the oil is getting to? I was not going to run a cooler until a few runs on the track to see what happens.
I still recon a fully loaded V8 wagon with mum and the kids, dragging a 2 tonne caravan up a mountain will be harder on the donk than a few squirts down the the straight at Sandown or Winton!

What engine oil temperatures are considered normal, or excessive, on a LS Donk?

Default Temp

Stumpy,

The experts reckon the water and oil temp should be within 10% of each other.

The water on the LS donks run at a high 96 deg ( normal operating temp ) where the computer controlled fan cuts in.

The oil temp was gettting to 115-120 with the water at 100.
Therefore the oil is too hot under these conditions.
