In Vic you can either buildon the boundary or it has to be a meter or so off it.
The regs want either no space for vermin/rubbish to collect, or enough space to access for cleaning out.

In NSW you can build on the fenceline (after approval) the wall has to be structually sound, aesthetic and have no windows. If the RTA was the building authority it would have to be crash tested then submitted for approval for three years pending consideration of approval then crash tested again because they have changed the rules

Not beng critical (I am not a builder) but are teh timber poles permitted to be concreted straight into the ground?

I was going to ask that as well. Usually there are metal 'stirrups' in the concrete and the post sits in them with a bolt through it.

I guess you clowns didn't notice the fence posts about a metre from the pergola posts!
Seriously the posts are PROBABLY treated or permapine.

H4 treated, designed to be put in the ground. Much more solid than stirrups.

Fair enough,
I did see the fence but figured a fence is not as load bearing as I am assuming the new post will be.

well i'm a carpenter & yes you can put h4 in ground but i wouldn't if the pergola is going to be in cased in a slab swelling & contraction of the posts will lead to cracking of the slab eventualy, but each to there own stirrups are the go but some want them in ground & termites still will eat through t2 & h4 grades if you don't believe me i'll send you pics of a house that had treated post $ 24k ago + a new kitchen /bathroom & deck posts & ive still got to do the roof trusses yet

Termites were banned from entering Victoria years ago, there's the odd illegal immigrant, but we sent them packing, joined up with the cane toads i believe.

I don't care what they are ....wood in dirt or concrete doesn't stand the test of time. and bugs eat them too...termites and slaters.
