Best 295/50 X 15 ???
I'm about to ditch the old Goodrich RTAs and at the same time go to a ten inch rear rim. I'm staying with the 15s.
My preferred size choice for rear tyres is 295/50X15, and I'm seeking comments from owners of this size tyre as to the brand they've chosen, together with any comments, good or bad, from their experience of them. If you could also state whether they were sourced locally or from OS, that would be helpful too.
I'm not looking for track day jobbies at this stage, just good road tyres.
Thanks for any advice....

Not in this size ... unless they are marketed under a different name or description.

Do billboard come in this size?
I am thinking of ditching my 17's in order to fit billboards.

Yes in 15, no in 17. Most people say they hunt a lot on the street, only good for the track.

Avons or Goodyear Billboards will cost Japan's national debt by the time they're landed.
It seems that Mickey Thompson ST, Cooper Cobra and Mastercraft Radial GTs are all made in the same factory with the same compound. About $105US to $145US each plus the flight over.
Look at the Hankook Ventus H101 or Kumho Ecsta as locally available alternatives that are getting a good reputation in performance circles. There's a Hankook & Kumho wholesaler/retailer in Archerfield:

In fact, by coincidence I saw a nice old Chevy next door to there recently and took a photo of it.

I have been very happy with my Dunlops. They have much better traction than BFG TAs, are reasonably priced and have held up very well. Of course, my driving is limited to normal street driving- if I were to do any "high performance" driving I would consider the Avons or the Billboards.

Don
I did this research a while ago and yes the CR6ZZ Avons cost a mint but from what I've read, are about the best tyre if you want street legal high level grip. Clearly you are paying for that but evidently they don't disappear quite as fast as one would expect which is an unusual bonus.
Found a local supplier here in Melbourne, Stuckeys, and they have the sizes in stock, I went and looked at these tyres including 295/50/15 and 245/60/15's. At $625 and around $495 (they quoted on the 225/65's) respectively EACH!
Equivalent US prices were $444 and $377 each plus freight. Found I can sea freight all four tyres but two at a time to avoid GST for $300.
Have stopped looking for now as other projects have kept me away from the car again, but I want ( and by my driving history - need) grip and am prepared to pay for it when the time comes.
Was looing at the Y352 Yokis but the other benefit is that the Yokis are only H rated whereas the Avons are V rated.
If you happen to find other options please do post your discoveries.
Cheers
Steve

Good 15" tyres are hard to find now.
Billboards are cool, but not legal in Oz.
I have a set of near new cheap 295's I will be selling soon. PM me if interested in details.
I am upgrading brakes soon and will not be able to use 15s any more.

Avons are the best, but $2000 for 15 inch tires is a ripoff, next i would go with the goodyear BB, bias ply, do hunt on street, but somewhat cheap in price, and they look cool. Other than that, the 15 inch radials are crap, especially with the power our cars have.

I use the AVONs and I think they are wonderful.
The MT Sportsman SR is supposed to be competitive at half the price and made from a similar compound. I understand that the STs are good too, but maybe they are a bit harder. They are DOT legal stateside.
Search those terms, there are lots of comments.

Keep in mind young Don...whatever you buy will probably be on the car for many years...
I don't expect you'll be clocking up 20,000 klms a year.
I'd be "splurging" on the best...and work out the price over a number of years....my 2c worth !
Cheers,
Young Warren.

HISSIN - did you buy them in Aus or US? How was the price if you bought locally?

If he keeps going on interstate bike rides and leaves the keys somewhere that I can find them, you never know...

Boxhead, are the billboards also referred to as the bluestreaks. I was wanting to register my cobra with 15 inch wheels however the engineer wanted a z rated tyre, no chance in a 15 so I went with the 17.
Not really the look I wanted, so again another change, when I get the time and money!!
I think that it its hard to get a compromise between street and track. To be honest the best thing is to buy a set of good slicks or groved race tyres on another set of rims and use them on the track days. I think that people ask too much from a road tyre.
Beejay what brakes are you upgrading to.

I dont really know Kanga, I have not looked that deep into it yet.
But if needed as a last resort I will get the Goodyear stencil and spray whatever tyre I get.
It is more the "look" I am after, than out and out performance.
And as you suggested, I think I too would get a dedicated set of track tyres when the time comes.

Thanks for the thread, very helpful.
