High back seat for CR

Pick the smallest new cars and try for seats, but I expect even now the current MX5 seats might be too big. The old MX5 seats were quite small, we used them 7 years ago in a Cobra. You can always trim the foam on the seat base to squeeze them in.

On fabricated seats, just make sure the testing paperwork with the seats are for the new height.

We have had to test our seats to the new height.

After spending time in what I think is the only two motorsport shops in Adelaide it didn't take long to work out one of them offers very poor service and it was suggested to me that I just spend my time looking at the seats on display and pick what I like. And if needed some measurements just use your tape measure to work out if any of the seats fit and I can order it in.

In the other shop I recieved a warm welcome and 100% attention and scrutiny of all seat in the shop time spent on the internet looking for and printing out dimensions of the seat which were possible contenders.

Wow I know where I would prfer to spend my money!

If you like the seats you like how can I make them work ?

Anyway I am loving the classic style seat made by "Cobra seats" and thinking that if I double the height of the head restraint of the seat It would offer me the height I am looking forIt would change the look a bit but I think it is still better than introducing a modern seat. This would then bring in the issue of trying to strengthen the two uprights so that the head support would not bend the uprights if pressure was placed on the head rest. So can I add support to the head rest by mounting the seat perminemtly in the position I need and adding a third leg for suppor from the head rest back onto the rear bulk head.This might be reasonable considering the seats will be retrimmed anyway and a frame could be made for the larger head restraint to suit. Or the two upright posts could be changed to a wide flat steal upright into the head rest which would offer greater strength compared to the standard pencil sized ones.

How does any of this sound ?

So Monday will involve a chat with my engineer again and one with the man doing the build for me and we will see where it leads me.

I will keep your contact in mind and look at it if a local solution is net easy to find but style and look is right down my alley. What would be interesting is to know how tall you are and have you had anyone 6,3 in drivers seat before ?

The logistics that I have been dealing with so far is I am in Adelaide and the car is being built in Sydney which makes all of this a little more of a challenge.

I have no real issue with the travel as long as I confident of the result.

Scoob, if you modify that seat frame or headrest frame it will need to be retested and certified. And if it's not high enough now, that seat won't have been tested to the latest ADR height requirements. So you run the risk of it not being accepted, even if the engineer accepts, the transport department might not.

In a Cobra finding suitable seats is a pain in the backside. (pun intended)

Measured from the base cushion to the top. The measurement in the ADR is 800mm but a measuring sphere is used to locate the reference point to simulate the hip. 860 is a rough measurement, i dont know exactly what it is meant to be. My seats in my 2010 Subaru impreze are 870mm.

good point modifications to ADR aproved seats could cause trouble .

I think in SA we are not bashed with the big stick unlike NSW .

Wish I was 6ft3, I'm 5ft6 but the 6 inch part is my legs (no more comments please).
My bro inlaw is 6ft4 and does sit a lot higher but he has a 10ft arse and does'nt sit neatly in the seat.
The width of these seats even allowed enough spare room to glass in some door sills aswell. Personal view but needs them to finish area. You can see seat mounting point in pic>

i think what you are saying confirms he fits in and has a line of sight through the windscreen not over it and he is not built like me being a been pole.The compact size is a good thing a must for cobras as everyone is agreeing.

The mistake I made when siting other CR,s was I never looked at the seating in regards to the head rest and I just thought this feals nice and looks nice this will do. It wasn't until I saw photos of me sitting in my car in a half trimmed seat did I see the problem I have.( I think is a problem )

I have seen your car Scoob - very nice paint. Will be a nice car when finished.

thank's for the thumbs up on the paint colour , I still have not seen the car in real sunlight only in workshops and to top it off last week I broke a drought with a visit to Sydney for the first time in over twelve months to see the car.

The plan is to complete the car before shipping to Adelaide for final engineering and local rego.

Neil has taken it on and I have needed a person to trust with the whole build and he is the best man for the job as I see it.

My mates in Adelaide still cant believe I didnt build it locally and with spending so much money on a car.

My seats were bolted down so the engineer had no inkling of my mods. but agree strictly they should have be re-certified.

However with welding by a professional welder with double overlap at all moded points including an insert to the tubing I can not see any risk of failure ot the seat frames.

I have a pair of these high backs from an Excalibur Cobra.

They are also a bit wider.
