Heat proofing - ideas

Hi all,



I am looking to use a good quality heat proof blanket to place in the engine bay to both protect the paint and reduce the temperature.

After searching a number of links and then trying suppliers I came up short.

There are plenty of sound proofing and very thick insulation type materials but I am after something with a lot less bulk...

I want to cut the blanket to size and then fold it back and edge trim it. I have found a suitable cotton to stitch the blanket and a trimmer but not blanket..

Any ideas or leads would be appreciated.

What about stuff like Lizardskin rather than blanket material?

Dyna-Liner from the inside of the passenger compartment sealed with aluminum tape.

Bernie, if it's for underneath the rear clip, we recommend using some aluminised cloth. It is approximately 2-3mm thick. It will protect the fibreglass and paint from heat damage. Use hi-temp silicone to glue the cloth to the rear clip. For the edges, we just use some masking tape and run a cosmetic bead of silicone over the edges. If you do that for all the edges it actually makes it more durable as it stops the edges fraying and cosmetically looks better.

You could edge trim this cloth as well for a neater finish.

I have attached a photo on a GT40 rear clip. Not the neatest silicone job, but it will give you an idea.

Also another photo with the material used on a rear firewall with grey silicone used to cover the edges.

I lined the cockpit with aluminum foil covered fiberglass with success. I also installed catalyctic converter shield between the mufflers and the bottom of the cockpit since I have out the rear exhausts. Bruce M

Try JEGS Performance Auto Parts - Holley - Billet Specialties - Edelbrock - MSD - Moroso - Mr Gasket product no 893-16850 or similar supplier, there is a product by COOL IT (thermotec), it is made from Kevlar with a Mylar finish which withstands up to 3000 deg f radiant and 1100 deg f direct contact comes in a 26" by 40" sheet for US $90. I would assume someone in AUS would stock it.
