QA1 Coil over shocks
Hi to all;
Im sure this has been covered before but i would appreciate any input from those "in the know" that can help me. I am looking at some new coil overs from the US.Im keen on the QA1 s. It seems the double and single adjustable alum bodied Proma Star Coil overs are not a bad unit. Im thinking the single adjustable ones for myself as I just want some basic adjustment without doing my head in with all the different valving combos that a double adjustable would offer. I just want to do some track days and would like to make some adjustments without getting carried away. Spring rates are sorted.
Trouble is are these shocks ok for track work ( not ovals) or are they a Drag race only set up and no good for road racing ?.Any ideas ?
Cheers

Hi Chris,
I have Proma Star double adjustables on my Cobra and they're a very well made unit. These are a road/track shock as I understand it, with drag applications being catered for by another model.
With single adjustables you have one dial that controls compression and rebound of your springs, whereas with double adjustable shocks you have a separate dial for compression and another for rebound. So there's nothing mysterious or complicated about double adjustables.
In my opinion if you're keen to set the car up for track work you will likely want different levels of control over compression and rebound. If not, just put both dials in the same position and they will behave as single adjustables.
I that found Summit had the best price including shipping. I certainly wish the AUD was as strong when I bought mine - good luck with your decision.

I have 2x DDR4855B and 2x DDR5855B. These have the spherical bearings on each end rather than bushes (less comfort, more control). Search eBay with those model numbers and you'll find them for $595 USD per set.

Chris,
They, the single for sure, are great shocks. Before you buy, check Speedwaymotors.com.
They are $399.00 per pair including your choice of springs.

Hi Gents
Sorry to hijack this thread but I was wandering if someone could help, I am looking for new shocks for the rear, as the car bottoms out over bumps and I want to get it sorted before the nationals. I am running jag rear on a G-Force and have monroe shocks with lowered springs x 4, but to get the height I wanted I had extra grooves made in the shock to lower. But now have the bottoming out problem. Can anyone recommend the right adjustable coilover I should use or how to measure my set up to buy the correct length shock and spring.
Thanks
Stuart

From my understanding, to figure what shock suits your application, you need to get the vehicle at ride height and measure distance between shock mounts.
Then reading your chosen suppliers catalogue, you want a shock that willmput your measurement in the middle of there travel lengths (they supply compressed and extended lengths)
Springs I am not 100% sure I understand, so I won't comment to add possible bum steer

Thanks Boxhead makes sense, I only want to have one shock on each side so I have to choose a heavier spring, but I think I have a read thread a while back with recommendations on spring rates with this set up.

Quality shocks and Jag rear set ups
I too am interested in replacing my shocks and had considered QA1's too, though whether now or later I am unsure but firstly how do they rate against say a Koni or Bilstein equivalent as two reputable brands I have at least had past experience with?
And then following on Stuart's theme, and continued thread hi-jack (sorry) am curious to understand whether you can simply replace the twin rear shocks on a std Jag rear with one each side with uprated springs of course.
Does not the whole design geometry and hence suspension operation and performance get affected?
Keen for feedback on both topics.
Cheers
Steve

Steve, not sure about performance vs Koni but QA1s can be serviced locally and this was a consideration for me.

Steve;
I run a Jag rear with single shocks either side. I have some basic Koni rears that do not have the adjustable external knobs and I have a pair of 450lbs springs. For daily driving the 450lbs are spot on. I would consider 475lbs for trackwork but maybe some shocks with quick external adjustment would negate this . As i want new shocks, I should do that first and replace the springs after if need be. The Koni rears have done bugger all work, the replaced a pair of Aldans which were not something I would buy again. But with a new motor on the way I want to be sure the rear can be stiffened up for the odd track day as the extra "twist" coming from the front will be substantial.
Sambo; Thanks for the numbers.....will do the research.

Rear shocks location
Chris
Sounds like you are having no problems only running a single shock per side to the rear, has the car always been set up like that?
I'm still somewhat sceptical given the variance between the twin shock set up and a single but perhaps it is all ok under all but say race driving loads. Can anyone answer this ?
And are the shocks at the front or back of the mounting assembly?
Steve

When it came time to replace my rear heims, I bought QA1's and I'm very happy with them I would highly suggest spending the extra and buy the double adjustment. Just like with the heims on our 360 winged sprint car, heims don't last long being metal on metal. The either get ovaled out & loose, or will bind. If you replace yours, let me know and I'll send you the link for the best heims on the market and have zirks with a different grease that won't get hot and leak. Don't buy Speedways, their cheap crap !
I also used electronic scales on each corner. Man, was I amazed just how off,.....each corner was ! Now, all four corners are about equal and the front to back is 51%-49%. It drives and handles so,.... much better.
My point, if you're going to replace the shocks, you might as well go through the steps I did, you'll be much happier. Here's a pic of the strut, and if you want to borrow mine, shoot me a email or call.

I believe that you want 60% of travel available for compression. I have used QA!'s on around 8 cars with good results. I have used both heim ends and urethane ends. For street driving i prefer urethane. For the few times I am on a track they are fine for me.

Steve; The chassi has always been that way and its the same chassi that was campaigned in the Marque sports racing class by George Vidovic from GV automotive. That was the reason I bought it, I knew the chassi is good.
Dimis; Yes that my car and its for sale, but it wont stop me fiddling with it as I will store it next year if it doesnt go. I have a new engine in the pipeline and some good friends at FPR who are screwing it together so it should be special when done.
Cheers
