Chasing an E303 cam
In planning for another phase of my engine build I will need to source a mild Ford Motorsport cam in this case an E303 grind.
Does anyone have this grind cam sitting unused in a shed corner that they would like to sell?

No not looking to snaffle a cam for nothing so no risk of loosing a bet on this just wasn't sure if someone had started down a rebuild track and changed their mind.
I may not myself end up with what I'm thinking but it is easier to spend a bit a coin here and there and gather the bits in advance.
Might as well ask about people's thoughts on aftermarket ECU's. I'll have to buy one of those too. What decisions need to be made regarding the various features on offer and hence which brand and model I should chase?
And is the technology in these changing as quickly as other electronics seem to be?
If so it might be smarter to await closer to the time to get something reasonably current.

Your motor looks pretty similar to mine Stephen. Why are you changing the ECU/EEC? They can be chipped for new cams, heads, etc.

Fresh engine

Yes it is a fresh engine so the plan is still to get back on the road and drive as soon as life lets me - read now another 4 - 6 month delay. The specialist admitted yesterday that I total ruptured my achilles!!
However it doesn't stop me planning future stages.
The std Ford ECU can be chipped I also gather but the ECU itself is quite limiting for manipulation and tweaking. I guess as a first cheaper step this might be a way to go though.
Still a nice Haltech, Motec, Autronic, Wolf.... whatever would offer improved tuning flexibility. Hence the question as to what is suggested.
Did I mention a nice tuned exhaust is on the list too. So each change needs and ECU tweak and it might just all end up cheaper using an aftermarket ECU than chipping each time.
Lots of time to plan now.

Sorry I forgot about the injury Slowy... here's to a not so slow recovery.
Is it just the engine/ECU that needs sorting over the next 4-6 months? I'd still be tackling the other stuff first, that way you might be driving it in Feb/March while the weather is good. When winter arrives again you can pull it off the road for the engine upgrades.

It's all getting better
Paul thanks for the well wishes.
The car needs the re-wiring finalised and plumbing associated with the plenum, cooling system and intake the same as what you've installed I've decided, to finish off before the car can even be restarted.
Then there's the interior to finalise and all those extras such as the side pipes and roll bars to finish off.
So plenty of time to tinker after I've got it going again.

Ha - we'd already discussed what the arrangement was though not sure if Marty picked up on my signals that it was a done deed in terms of choice of intake system.
Seems a second piece of the general's product is making it into the car. But then it is such a slut for all the other maker's parts it has used what's another piece between friends!

Slowly,
Sorry to hear about the achillies I did mine 2 1/2 years ago, 3cm tear, surgery, 2 Months in a cast and another 1 in a MOON BOOT,,,Not fun.
I didn't think public servants moved that quickly to break anything ( except the budget )
You seem to be redoing everything in this rebuild, wiring/engine/exhaust/interior/bars, it would be interesting to work out the cost difference between doing it once properely and your way. Maybe once completed you can drill down and compare what things need to be done once and let the newbies know.

Wish it were only a three month recovery you were lucky!
I totally rupture my right achilles so I'm 6-8 weeks in a cast/cam boot on crutches, then will be allowed to load up the foot still on crutches getting used to the feel again. Then 3 months in some sort of special shoe.
Was told it would be 6 months before I could even sail again and being the right foot, I can't yet drive.
It will get better but it seems my Master footy days are over! But I am (was) still quick so the nickname fooled them again. That comes from not working in the public service - who do you think I work for?
As to the car yes it is effectively a new rebuild, partly a function of the time I didn't first have to make it to engineering, a lack of good knowledge about better build ideas and a lack of funds back then.
As to costs I stopped counting after it got through rego. as like my yachts it is just a money sink one doesn't ponder over but just enjoys.

I'm not sure it's fair to suggest that Slowy's car wasn't constructed (done) properly, my recollection is that at the time of his build completion the sun had set on the engine being allowable and he was up against a very hard deadline.
Notwithstanding this, some comparitive costs would be interesting, particularly interesting would be the cost of compliance items vs optional upgrades.

I was not suggesting that at all, it just seems he is redoing stuff that could have been done right/better the first time.
Building the Daytona ( ok signing cheques ) there are things like wiring/interior/wheels and stuff that dont need to be done twice.
Nothing more frustrating doing things again, these things take long enough to do without doubling up.

That's why I added the comment about a lack of knowledge such as hiding wiring. I was trying to get to engineering in the original build but didn't perhaps know all the best ways of doing this to avoid having to re-do items.
I had 18 months from when I knew what engine I could use to get through engineering. Most nights were spent in the garage including through winter, though I think that was one of the mild winters, to achieve what I did. I was also on a far more limited budget back then.
I'm rebuilding now as if I had the full three years and with far more pre-thought on each issue. This means it is not just a simple refit to old holes which in part has dragged the rebuild time but at least the car is heading towards how I want it to look.
Happy once its done to try and calculate the cost but I know the end number will not be cheap.

I was in a similar situation at the end of 2007 as the *relaxation* for my engine was to be scrapped on 31 December. Putting the car together was frustrating knowing I didn't have time to do it exactly the way I wanted. But I didn't spend anything on stuff that had to be redone. While it might seem like most of the build, I decided to redo the boot trim, the engine and the interior after rego. So on these I spent little. The boot was untrimmed for rego ($0), the engine was as purchased with oil and plugs (both consumable) and the interior trimming was about $200 in materials. All in all the only waste was time.
Of course, the most frustrating of all is the fact that the *relaxation* was extended as of about 15 December. By which time I had already jumped through all the hoops apart from final inspection.
So doing it twice is definately a time impost but not necessarily financial. So long and the dollars are not spent in the wrong areas in the first place.

Sounds like we were definitely in the same boat - last of the 302's and the next option being the elbows out Boss motor, it was a challenge. Boy was I pissed too when I learnt I'd had another 12 months.
Anyway the one big difference was my kit was third hand, over 10 years old by then and quite scruffy so I was always planning to tear the build down and restart nicely.
My spirited roundabout adventures just set the timing as immediate. But I guess looking at the work I had done I wasn't as pleased as I could have been so I redid many bits.
Re-made the brake lines, but bent up very nicely and hidden where possible, use of aluminium fuel lines and relocation to allow braided hose connection.
I also rejuvinated everything to be certain I could get some time free of breakdowns. This found ball joints the previous owners had just used off the donor suspension, I have a 60 year old Mark V jag diff in the car but a bit of work was done on this and it will probably see me out before it goes bang, new discs etc etc oh and of course a fresh engine (cracked block meant an insurance R&R) and a new TKO600, the donor T5 had been used for dragging I'm sure by the previous owner and was stuffed.
So now I just need to get the bluddy thing on the road!!
But leg first I guess.

Given the original reason for this thread I should mention I found a local bloke with two E303 cams.
Buying the one he bought and has never used and the other came out of his brother's car that had only been run several hundred k's before it too was removed.
If anyone else wants a low mileage E303 give me a holler and I can put you onto this guy. He said he's never got around to advertising them as they are both unwanted.
