B&B for me Stiffy.
Be stuffed if I am gunna find a caravan park, walk accross a paddock to have a shower or a crap.
Have to set up camp each day, pay the extra fuel costs, try and drive that farkin thing through London traffic.
I have a week booked down near Goodwood, also booking 4 nights near Paddington station (close to Hyde Park and Marble Arch)
We will spend most of our time north near Inverness and along Mull of Kintyre region and the Lochs.
May even head over to Isle of Skye for a day or 2.

Either the Golf or BMW should be fine. I've owned a few Golfs and they should provide more than enough room for your needs. The smallest version is the VW Polo and the Golf is the 'compact'. I've driven across France, 4-up with two weeks of luggage (packing as an art form) and return 55mpg from a diesel version. They cover the ground and are comfortable on long trips...

My wife has a 120D and we took all our clothes, ski gear and wedding stuff from brissie to Thredbo for our wedding & got 5.5 l/100k. Plenty of room with rear seats folded down. That included 4 tier wedding cake & table decorations... |

Brooklands
Whilst over there I suggest a trip to Brooklands where hopefully some AC cars will be around, but if not, the museum is a very worthwhile stop. Mercedes,which is next door, has an incredible facillity. Well worth a full day trip.
No beer allowed so you Aussies might need to make it a 2x 1/2 day trip!
Hope the Cobras pull it off as Ferrari seem determined to have enough cars entered to make sure at least one lasts the pace!

We will be doing a bit of driving around the narrow roads of Ireland so we will be looking at a Golf or similar. One thing I noticed in the quotes is the sat navs add about 160 GBPs for our five week hire. Being an old fart without an iPhone I am now planning on purchasing a sat nav from a Dick Smith's-type outlet for around $80 (55GBP) when we arrive. Any thoughts on this approach?

I have a Garmin Nuvi sat nav, I bought a SD card with UK maps on it.

I'll have the wife in the passenger's seat working the maps for me - very very old fart technology!
But then in 91 we never got lost using the same method - except when we struck one T intersection with signs indicating directions to the same town in both directions - WTF!!
Anyone driving through the lakes district, go look for Upper and Lower Slaughter.
Real town names I kid you not and both towns consist only of stone constructed buildings if memory serves correctly. Very beautiful area!
And we too are looking at a Golf or Pug for transport around the UK.

For anyone still waiting for tickets to arrive (like me - ordered 7 weeks ago), Ive been told they will be back onto sending out Revival ticket orders after the Festival of Speed (on this week) and Glorious Goodwood are over.
I was assured they will arrive at least a week before the Revival event.

When we went to UK last time I took my own satnav machine. Purchased and downloaded UK/Ireland maps before we left home. It made it soooo easy to get around. Slowy.......if you wnt to put your faith in wifey being able to act as satnav good luck. You could end up driving with the map on your knees and believe me thats not easy in England!

Guys, i spent a few weeks driving the UK last year after the festival of speed and my recomendation would be a combination of both sat nav (near impossible without it), and a map to give you a wider perspective. I just used the maps on my phone and they worked great rather than purchasing a sat nav or maps.

Guys while you are there if you haven't had your fill motoring displays when you are finished with Goodwood the British National motor museum is just down the road at Baeulieu, well worth a look both for the museum and the town it self, the other one to have a look at is the Haymes motor museum at Sparkford.

We have roving grandstand tickets for the Friday and Woodcote grandstand seats for the Saturday and Sunday.
Staying at Littlehampton for a week or so and then we'll be trying to see as many of these as possible..

Ash - Dad and I aren't leaving til early Sept, so we can bring your tickets over if they haven't arrived by 9 August.

I will be there.
We fly out 23rd August, 4 nights in London, then grab the rental and head north.
Back to Heathrow by the 6th Sept and fly over to Amsterdam, a few days there with friends then back to England on the 10th.
Head down to Chichester with rental car again.
Staying here Chichester house holiday rental - Beach house, great views, private beach access, refurbished to a high standard
We then have about 10 days to get home after Goodwood, no tickets booked as with Ronda working Qantas, we get "standby tickets" so we may come home via anywhere yet, maybe a couple of days in LA?
