Default Dash Lights & Switches

Hi all. I have some questions regarding the minimum requirements for dash lights and switches for my cobra build.

Right now I have the following gauges:

Speedo
Tacho
Oil Press
Water Temp
Volts
Clock

So with all that I am wondering what switches and lights I need to install on my dash. I am thinking that I would need (as a minimum):

Switches:
Ignition
Lights - Low and High
Indicator - Left/Right
Windscreen Wipers
Windscreen Wash
Horn
Hazard

Dash Lights:
Brake Fail
High Beam
Park Brake Light
Indicator
Low Oil Press (do I need this if I have a gauge?)
Alternator Warning
Check Engine (I hope the ECU will outout something for this)

Note: I was not planning on installing a heater or demister given the no roof condition. I believe this is acceptable to the aussie rulemakers?

What am I missing? Should I have a master electrical switch? Do I need a fuel pump switch?

Many Thanks, I appreciate your comments

You will need seat belt lights, also a hazard light switch (if switch does not have a light then you will need one for this too).
An oil warning light is good as it is much easier to see at a glance (or gets your attention) if it lights up.
A master switch is good to have, but does not need to be in the dash.
With your light switch, it will be park and low beams, high beam will be controlled by switch on indicator stalk.
Your ECU will have output for check light, will also have output for oil light.
I did not run a switch for fuel pump, I instead used the output from ecu to trigger this, I ran the trigger to a relay, relay powers the fuel pump.
I did not fit a demister or wipers/washers as I had an aero screen fitted originally.

I have wiring pin outs for ecu to suit LS1 if it helps?

The seat belt light - where in the ICV rules does it say you need a seat belt light?

hey boxhead
Aussie ls1 ecus don't have oil light out or ecu light and therefore
no wiring for them
the USA ones do so u need to mod the tune to get them to work
Id have to check my diags but even USA ones might not have
oil light wire as a lot of these signals are serial data
and if yr using ls3 ecu I think the Aussie ones don't have ecu light either
so u have to add wire

like boxhead said don't run pump off a switch as its illegal
and very dangerous and heaps of people do it so I'm surprised
there ain't more serious accidents
all efi cars never run pumps all the time with ignition on

ADR 69 = Full Frontal Impact Occupant Protection.

And you are right, it is mentioned in there. However, ADR 69 is not called up in the ICV requirements at all. And according to my build letter, my final approval is based upon that standard.

And sideshow, if the GMPP ECU has no outs for check engine, low oil etc, is it hard to add these things?

Thanks all.

A charge light triggered from the alternator also serves as an early warning for a broken alternator/waterpump drivebelt, hence overheating warning.

sorry to be rude but
I sort of hate the gmpp looms and won't go anywhere near them
I don't want to go into it but u get what u pay for with those looms
they do work and look average but are cheap

I've had to wire one up in an old Cadillac and was throwing up
looking at the motor in this nice car anyway people should know
how I feel bout them from a post ages ago when I got screamed at
for telling people how I feel about the looms hehehehehehe

but they r cheap and they do start motor and it runs ok. the rest I can't comment on

the one i wired i doubt had the mil light as it was awhile ago so cant remember
if not I'm sure u will have an e67 ecu but i remeber there being a big 12 pin waterproof
plug with the left over dash wires so it should say in the instructions if there is a MIL wire

hey boxhead I think all Aussie ls1 looms I've worked on don't have mil
light wire
I can check my genuine Holden diags to see
it's red plug pin46 I vaugily remember

I have my PDF's on my work computer, saved to the server, I will take a look on Monday.
Jethrow, I am not sure if the LS1 is any use to you and your LS3? But if you message me an email address, I can send it to you.
Only any good I guess if your using factory ECU and wiring?

ls1 loom from usa has mil wire aussie one doesnt as it runs thru serial data
i just wired an ls1 from vt vx with complete bcm and dash and no mil wire required
when running factory vt vx dash
but its not hard to get the ls1 ecu mil working
plenty of literature on the net about it
im sure jethrow will have an e67

general motors perforamcne parts in the usa
they make a generic loom to fit most late model ls2/3/7 looms
they r made to fit afew motors which aint to bad just some injector wires are abit long and afew other things just look a tiny bit messy plus big massive fusebox arrangement is ungly in enigne bay but not to bad
main thing we stay clear of them is it used to be hard to do anything to the e67 ecu they supply in the kit
so if u r interested in them ring some tuners and see if they can tune them well as they r
made to be fitted and left at that
if u need to mod anything on them there is abit involved
but hey they are only a grand or so from usa
or buy them from eagle for 1800 or 1900 i think but beware as eagle know nothing bout them once they sell the looms but dont bag me for saying this
i have been thru some of these headaches afew times so im saying this because ive gone thru it all with other customers and we have fixed ecu issues for others who have bougbt ecus from usa so we r saying this from experience we r not out to bag it

buy hey they are very very cheap

GMPP = General Motors Performance Parts.

I have a new LS3 with a new GMPP ECU and loom setup. The ECU is the one GMPP sells that is setup to run the motor only, no body control stuff in it. It also has the fly by wire throttle.

Sideshow, I have no idea if it is a e67? Looking at it, the part number is 19258268 Module, GM Performance Parts LS376.

so you are saying that it is better to use a gmpp than the original wiring loom or is there something or someone who can retro the factory ecu to run & be rewired to suit

Not sure if better is the right word, I just thought it was easier. In theory, this should run right out of the box, and give me 430 emission compliant horsepower!

Rob, I used a Commodore harness and ecu, modified to suit.
I deleted all the BCM items and anything else not needed, using the PDF it was fairly simple and I did it one Saturday arvo.
If you get a genuine harness from a wrecker I can send you a copy of PDF.
I found it easiest to pin it all to a large cardboard sheet and lay it out and label as I went, anything not needed was cut out.
