Default Tail light requirements?

All GTOs left the factory with tail lights mounted flush on the rear panel. At the end of their competitive racing life a few were turned into road cars - many more now. Some cars then had their tail lights attached to raised mounts and I can only assume it was something to do with a registration requirement for side visibility. With Kamm tails being in vogue at the time I notice the Daytona Coupe has the same 'side hidden' lights as the factory GTOs.

Does anyone know if this might be an issue with registration here in Oz? Thanks.

G'day Peter,

I think the ADR and a discussion with your engineer would be a good place to start to you don't finish up with heartache.

I'm not sure about the rear lights but I have had to add supplementary blinkers at the front to get the angle of visibility acceptable to the RMS.

Cricket's now over for the season so I'll try to drop by over the weekend if you will be playing in the shed.

Dave - It looks like I will have to use a raised mount. Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 6/00 - Direction Indicators) 2005 see Annex 1

For what it is worth, I have fitted Land Rover Defender rear lights on my Daytona.
Engineering inspection and final licensing did not raise any issue and the lights have proven very bright and effective in service.

Unfortunately NSW & WA were not created equal and our mob don't stuff around with the ADR's even in our new enlightened times.

Therein lies the problem with internet wisdom, what is acceptable in one place may not be in another.

Having your general location in your profile helps a lot and tends to stop people saying what the fcuk does he know because I got through.

In NSW and pretty much everywhere else I don't need bumpers on my clubman but in QLD I do, NSW won't accept exposed heat wrapped extractors but Vic & QLD will and so it goes on.

Thanks Paul et al. I feel like an outsider here but issues like this indicate some commonality.

A few measurements and a bit of trigonometry and it turns out the Kamm lip is not too deep to prevent flush mounting after all. The GTOs use Carello lights but with the stop lens alone $125 I was all set to go with the ‘Defender’ (Lucas?) lights however I ended up with some Cobra kit lights from an eBay supplier in New York, the earth fitting and the fibreglass bodywork being factors to consider. I did however dig deep for the beautiful Altissimo teardrop blinkers from the Italian eBay. I’m simply using Mini Moke headlights with the small rim.

Does anyone else spend hours at night lying in bed pondering these types of issues or should I be seeking professional help? Once again, thanks to all.

Thankfully, yes.

I didn't know anything about 'E' marks when I bought them and when my engineer told me on his first visit I can tell you my heart was in my mouth when he was checking the Altissimos - I was remembering getting up around 2.00am and using my wife's account to bid on them and then sweating on them actually arriving from Italy. Arr... the stress of building a kit.

Mando has Ferrari side marker lights on his beast.
But he probably ditched them for a pair of Veyron ones
