Check out Crutchfield on the internet. They have any option you need. I would go with the Amp in the boot setup with a 3.5 plug in for an MP3 player(Ipod). You can wire the amp to come on with the battery, and the volume can be controlled with your device. Speakers behind the seat, and a bazooka sub in the trunk.

The amp in the boot setup with a direct connection to an iPod is not as simple as I thought. Of course, the stereo sellers say that won't work, but it will to some extent if you have a pre-amp or an amp with gain and controls for frequency range. The Clarion unit still looks the best to me and has great reviews and suits all applications that may get wet. Dickering with prices in Australia and the US is the current issue.

I kind of agree re simplifying things. With a portable music player you have two loose wires in the cabin - the charge wire and the signal feed to the boot. Plus you have to secure the device so it doesn't slide around. Then remove it from view whenever you walk away from the car.

I'm planning just to have a decent head unit in the boot with a 64Gb SD card holding my entire music collection and a remote screen somewhere in the cabin. Amps can be added later if more juice is required.

Pretty much my approach exactly Paul. I have both a 16GB USB and an iPod in the trunk with the unit and antennae. All that can be seen in the car is the black/grey speakers - either in the footwells or behind the seats. There is a wired LCD remote in the glovebox (or maybe on a flip panel that comes down from under the dash - working on that) and a small RF remote to control the lot.

Sounds good Merv. Without a head unit, what is being displayed on the LCD remote? Can the iPod/USB track names be displayed remotely somehow?

Did you come across Fusion Electronics during your research? They have a number of iPod-ready heads units for marine and wired remotes.

maxum, I haven't fitted out the Cobra yet but here's a shot of the speakers in my runabout. Do you like the cup holders?

On the previous page Paul. Seems very similar to the Fusion set up. I saw the Fusion one at Wow! Likewise the Clarion shows on LCD screen on the remote and in car unit, track and other details from the iPod.

I had a secret audio in my other vintage car (1967 Volvo 123 GT see my photos) while the quality and reliability was excellent the 10 disk cd player was afected by the road bumps (trunk installed)

With the ipods and smart phones we don't need cd players anymore. The quality of the sound needed improvement and a decent amp would have made it better.

I installed in my Cobra a decent Stereo AM-FM-sigle cd player with ipod interphase (Alpine) took it to Best Buy they did an outstanding job installing the unit,)(lifetime warranty), a West Coast Cobra (unlike other models) has more room to play with space 4' wider and 6" longer body. for us full size boys.
These are my two cents in this matter. Don't approve of earphones, it is a guaranteed ticket

All installed. Hoists are useful for these things ...

The Commander unit goes in the glovebox (the other small unit in there is the switch control for speedo adjustment), the machine-less source unit in the trunk with both iPod Nano and 20GB USB stick (and radio tuner) and the RF remote in the door pocket. Sound quality of the Clarion 1620R marine speakers is terrific and the wired remote shows the full iPod functionality. No CD or CD bounce.

Great result Merv. A good sound system is more important than a third wiper blade if you ask me. Any photos of the speaker placements?

I can't wait to fire my Cobra down a long road with Immigrant Song up LOUD.

Thanks Paul. I still think your "cup holders' are the must-have accessory. Will post a pic of the speakers later. I tried the system yesterday during a break in the damned rain here, and "The Boss" comes through pretty well - at least up to 90km/hr.

Here is a pic of the speaker fitting Paul. They are solid, waterproof 6.5" speakers with adjustable tweeters. You have to measure very carefully in the Harrison, as behind the kick panel are several parts of the body frame. Using a long thin ruler down the slots for the door hinges you can measure the space available and with chalk, mark it on the carpet before cutting. Old story - measure twice and cut once!
