To, right, I'm keeping it a ford. My engine guy said the 351 heads are to square, so the header will stick out etc. And best to stick with the 302 windsor, the mounts are made for it. And boxhead, I'll go for the aftermarket manifold and throttle body later. I'll keep it stock for now.He also said he'll be able to make side pipes quiet enough. But where to fit the cats? Would it be worth while going to lpg, so you don't need cats?

You mean a tk5? A top loader is only a 4 speed, and the diff is 3.45 to 1. So i'll need overdrive.

Going with LPG (the stuff you use to cook sausages) in my opinion will lower its value for any potential shoppers (if you decide to sell later).

Cats can be done in side pipes.

The Coyote or modular engines wont fit between the firewall footwell area on a CR.
Do some measurements before spending hard earned on the donk.

You would have to do some surgery to the body glass and move the steering column mount from memory (firewall end).

What about something a little stronger ?

This "Monster" was in a nice HSV here at the Musclecar Shootout last weekend

If cats can be put in sidepipes, I'll defenitely go for fuel. Do you think it'll be below 85 dcb? Who does these. Would stainless be the way to go. 4 inch pipe on the outside, 2 inch on the inside with material in between.?

Dave us more learned and wise ones know this is true about the LS. Much better motors but don't tell them that. Let them keep using their big heavy motors as it keeps us ahead.

Considering your tight budget and you have mounts to suit Ford, shop around for a cheap AU Falcon XR8 engine with Borg Warner T5. The AU engines even with higher km's are normally still great engines and very reliable.

Plus with the XR8 engine you will still get that old school V8 sound.

With the budget you have in mind, you will need to watch every cent during the build.

Nothing wrong with an LS engine, we run them in the front, back and even sideways now.

That was my point Craig, a tight budget has been the "theme" so get something from AU manual (buy a wreck for $5k or so) this will give you a big head start.
A wreck will also give you engine ecu, engine wiring etc.

If you're dead-set on a top-loader you can get 5-speed versions. If you want Ford and budget is a concern I agree with Craig. Even I will agree a Ford idle sounds better than an LS, although its a different story when on-song at 6K

Ford 302 windsor engine | eBay
does anybody know about this engine?
I'm not sure how to paste a link.
I'm sure after a while, I'll want more horses. Spend and spend to satisfy the thirst. But I'll start of with the basics. Alot of the work has been done.
My boss has 2 engines lying around. twin overhead cam, 4.6 litre alloy block,
from america. Is this worth a look. My engine guy says a dohc engine won't fit. I'ts about 700mm across the covers. He's also got a t5 with no bellhousing.

Many of us have gone this way JD. There is a huge after-market list of goodies, as you know, for the Windsor. The T5 is fine, and quite cheap, if you keep the HP within reason.

Word of advice Jaydee. Before you go dropping a pile of cash on any motor, have a talk to your local engineer about what is realisticaly do-able in your state. You may save yourself from wasting a lot of money.

It may be cheaper to buy an old 302 but you may end up blowing all those savings out the window when you try to get it through your local emissions test.

The quad Cam 4.6 has been put in a CR in the past but you will probably need to cut the foot boxes and since it's already painted that's probably not a good option.

Thanks guys. I've talked to the engineer, and the laws here are a bit slacker. Any fuel injected motor after 93 is fine, 2.5% co adr37. I think in the other states it has to be less then 3 years old? Side pipes are fine, If they are below 90db. I'll keep it stock at the moment. Pity most intake manifold are ugly. I think it's much more exiting to build one, then just to buy one outright.
Hopefully I'll get it in the next 2 weeks. I Can get it trucked for $900.

JD, some extra information for you.

ADR 37/01 is the full label of the emissions level you need to meet. All states in Australia are at the same level now, 100% of 37/01.

Mike comes from one of the states here that has mandatory emissions testing, both NSW & VIC have mandatory emissions testing for all ICV's. So I think that it where is advice was coming from, although with the right advice and setup, 302w will pass 37/01, they did originally and we have better emissions techology now.

In SA if you use a known emissions compliant engine and run it in it's original emissions compliant configuration, an emissions test is not required.

If you don't want to perform an emissions test, you can only source the engine from AU series of Falcon's. Since the emissions standard is USA based, you can also run USA production engines from Mustang etc. Best engines from the USA are the early 90's Mustang engines.

That engine on ebay might already have security removed from the ECU and wiring loom sorted out for a Cobra. That is worth something.

That's good news on the engine. It opens up lots of options for you.

Having built several sets of side pipes now I reckon you will have a hard time getting it down to 90dB. Register it with an underbody system and swap them out later for track days and such.

Good advice from Mike, underbody is the way to go for registration in my opinion.

That's the go mate as Merv 2nds.

Mine's a 93 Mustang.......just get rid of that ugly intake with a nice Massflo setup 289, 302, 5.0 Mass-Flo EFI System for Small Block Fords - FORD - Mass-Flo EFI Systems

As is mine a - 93 rebuilt Mustang donk. Have been really pleased with it and the full engine, harness plus gearbox was about $4K (before I started the rebuild).
